Do a search. Been discussed plenty of times.

From memory they're 5.25" in the front and 4" in the rear.

Always, 5.25" in front... can vary in back. Either 4" or 5.25" depending on spec of sound system.

Sorry, but rears are definitely 4" or 5.25" and fronts are definitely 5.25".

Check out Bavarian soundwerks who supply direct drop-in replacement speakers for the E36. They quote the exact same sizes I have.

Thnaks guys. I really want to keep the interior reasonably stock without holes cut everywhere or 6x9's in the back...now to find some nice sounding 4's and 5.25's. chur

There's no real point changing the rear speakers. 4" aren't going to do that well regardless of what you buy. Spend more cash on the front speakers instead.

Even if you've got the 5.25 rears I'd leave them factory and spend the cash on the fronts instead.

I was thinking of doing something similar with the 6" Pioneer Kevlars i have...i also think i will def spend some $ on some decent fronts and tweeters.
