Lost Sensor ?

While cleaning my E39 530i Touring I noticed this nasty tire wear and marking :

Probably caused by the inner guard - as it seems that at some stage it has come away and been worn thru by the tire - possible sign of a historic frontal crash ?

Anyway, while looking at the inner guard, I noticed this sensor floating loose between the front bumper and the inner guard --

Does anybopdy recognise it ?

Whereabouts should it be located ?

normally there is a clip inside the bumper shell which it pushes into. They break from time to time.

My E34's temp sensor is the same, just hanging down keeping it real.

As stated it is your exterior temp sensor, it is located in a recess in a panel which is connected to the bumper and the splash panel/ engine protector plus attached to the lower wheel arch liner. Have a look on the 540i you have mentioned on your car's listed it should be the same as the touring. The lower wheel arch liner new from a dealer is around the $100.00 mark not sure on the panel that the sensor is housed in. Their could be other panels affected as well it might not be a cheep fix sorry to say.

Also unlikely that the inner guard could do that damage to the tyre.

tie it up out of the way with a cable tie, as a temporary measure, until you have ordered the replacement broken parts
