Still under Whelmed?

Recommended Posts

Um not so much now...more a cruiser than a bruiser... veiw photos in showroom or in my profile.. in gallery.. in "my Carz"

response to some of comments from last "post"

(1) totally aware that the e46 and e34 are very different cars in type and age..totally aware the motors are different in age and type...

(2) left Dunedin consum on computer 14.7...1200kms later...10.3, so the car is running sweet as a nut...tripping here and there now showing

11.4 all good

(3) the brakes tho leaves one totally underwhelmed..still

Peter from Dunedin (who I got the car from) owns Otago Tyres and Shock Shop . The guy tightened and serviced all suspension and steering components on car and has "tyred" the car properly. The car as i said handles suberbly

Short term plan

probably looking at an Inspection 2 Service in new year...I've got a leather gear knob on the way -the wooden ones hideous- spare master key, on it's way... muffler tips??

Longer term plan...new exhaust...new brakes...new wheels, same style but 17 and staggered...

Exhaust = Straight Pipe instead of the muffler, leave the resonator and cats.

Just did this on my e39 540, great note and not falcodore sound, or droney, just right.

What tyres are you running?

Also brakes, how do you mean not good?

Maybe new brake lines could fix it?

the brakes on the 540i's are a hydrolic booster system not a vaccum booster system ,

so they do have different fell to them , sort of delayed progressive feel.

so all the hydrloic system has to be in top order.

good clean/new p/s fluid . new brake fluid , no leaks around the hydolic assisted booster system including

the brake bomb (down below and behind the left headlight)

the brake bombs fail over time and will need replacing.

the hydolic booster can leak p/s fluid.

also make sure the brake pads and discs have plenty of meat on them.

i use the same brake disc/pad setup on my e28 and they work really well.

With the E34 hydrolic system, what's involved with retrofitting that to another vehicle?

sorry i have the same sort of system in my e28 with the 540i brake discs etc.

750i master cylinder , e28 hydro booster setup.

but i dont see why you couldn't fit it into another car ,

no real point though.

unless you need more room beside the engine.

The mounting holes for both boosters are the same. You need to use the 160 bar powersteering pump, accumulator (bomb), and the larger resevoir with all the appropriate plumbing. It would be best to run a cooler as well.

No room for normal booster, just another way round it really.

If the brakes are fairly average, another thing to check is the brake hoses.

My old E34 535i, had shite brakes when used on the track, lots of pedal but no stopping power...couldnt even get the ABS engaging.

Upgraded the pads, and fluids...still no better...eventually found the collapsed flexible hose on the diff.

Problem with the ATE brake hoses, is that they can look absolutely fine, but can be completely shot and not passing fluid

Based on your description and my experiences it sounds like the 'brake bomb' in your car might need replacing. Would pay to get this checked out
