E39 540i transmission service

Recommended Posts

Wondered if anyone might be able to shed some light on what my options are after messing up the first stage of the transmission service.

I had the car jacked up and ready to go and I went to loosen the fill plug before dropping the fluid from the drain plug, low and behold I stripped the bolt.....

Yes i know....

What are my options? Obviously its going to have to have to go to a specialist and have drill bits spinning near very sensitive areas.

I couldnt friggin believe it! Good job I didnt drop the oil first...

Do they still sell the helicoil, thread repairers. I think Repco use to. Perhaps see if they have one that's the size you require.

I had a similar problem with a wheel nut. If it's the type of bolt u put a socket onto try heating it up with a gas gun etc then hammering on a smaller socket. Worked a charm for me. Or could try welding another nut to it.

Just buy a second hand transmission pan with the drain & fill plugs in it, new gasket, filter and do the job properly using the correct allen key sockets. Did you strip the filler by using the wrong allen key or did you over tighten it instead of undoing it ?
