Let me tell you about my boat

I recently sailed Steinlager 2 back from Noumea to Auckland.

If you're under 25, Steinlager 2 was an 84ft fractionally rigged maxi ketch designed by Bruce Farr to compete in the 89/90 Whitbred sponsored Round the World Race. Which she duly won, winning every single leg on line honours, and the entire race on both line honours and handicap.

An opportunity to get aboard Steinlager 2 on a delivery voyage back from Noumea to New Zealand came up, and I've never focused myself so hard to get onboard a trip. My first port of call was my father, who did the round the world race some 10 years before Peter Blake won it. He was dead keen to come on the voyage, so we both applied to the Peter Blake Sailing Trust, and both were accepted as crew.

A couple of links to photos and video follows. I do ask that you don't disseminate the pics as I have been asked by a sailing magazine to publish a few of them for a story regarding the yacht. Feel free to desktop background the f**k out of them though. Cheers!

Pretty sure the same boat my cousin won the round the world in. Some history right there.

And how many thousand dollars did the acceptance cost? :P Or was that just to race there. Maybe just to race there.

Remember it well! Fisher&Paykel ran second and was chasing hard the whole way. Pretty epic to get on a delivery trip on such a beast of a boat.

Wonder what happened to the original Steinlager trimaran?

sh*t times flies, or I must be getting old...

Remember that race well, & others around the time. Watched live on TV them coming into Auckland... with F&P up their but. Was a time of NZ domination in yachting.

I would love to have had the chance you did to sail it back here <_<

I remember when this won and the grand entrance to auckland harbour around 10-11pm at night. I have never (and probably never will see) so many boats on the harbour at one time. It was blimmin hard keeping the boat at the same speed in the middle of the night with everyone else .. lots of near misses but everyone kept it together all the way to the inner harbour.

Chris Dixon had a cry at the time because no one was paying attention to him. *yawn*

Nice trip ... and awesome photos! :) nothing like it I bet and an experience you'll never forget ! :)

Broke up and sunk a few years ago off Norway.

how long did it take to do the trip?
