cliffdunedin 8 Report post Posted October 14, 2012 Hey guys, I have noticed a couple of times this week that my e36 auto, almost seems to slip for a second from a standing start so I tried on my driveway that has a slight angle and it does seem to slip just a little, strange thing is if i put it in 1st gear this problem does not occur anymore and it grabs fine. Does anyone have any idea what may be causing this? I've had a search and have found a few could be's but would be good if anyone has a good idea. _ethrty-Andy_ 2132 Report post Posted October 14, 2012 slipping in BMW transmissions of this era is usually just the fluid being low, does yours have an engine bay dipstick?

cliffdunedin 8 Report post Posted October 14, 2012 Thanks guys, ill look at changing trans oil and filter next weekend. Dextron 3 right? Do you think there would there be any benefit going synthetic with the old auto? Cheers
jom 98 Report post Posted October 15, 2012 Thanks guys, ill look at changing trans oil and filter next weekend. Dextron 3 right? Do you think there would there be any benefit going synthetic with the old auto? Cheers I put synthetic in a replacement (trademe $300) Jatco box and it's brilliant - however as it was out I got to change all the fluid. Don't think the torque converter drains fully with the box in the car. The fill procedure for the E36 is tricky - you need a u shaped tube and a pump, as the filler is a vertical tube in the bottom of the sump. Level needs to be set with the car in the air, the box at operating temp and a set speed - with the rear wheels turning... If it's a Jatco box it's nearly identical to Nissan, so get the filter and gasket from your friendly auto specialist, not the dealer.
antil33t 90 Report post Posted October 15, 2012 (edited) ^that filling procedure is for like all of them without a dipstick... If it doesn't have a dipstick I'd suggest going to an automatic specialist.... That's what I did. lol. milland can get the pan gasket and filter. (my car has a ZF) Edited October 15, 2012 by antil33t

Thanks for that, I did a little reading and it does seem a little tricky... when you say wheels turning, do you mean on jack stands, engine running and in gear
antil33t 90 Report post Posted October 15, 2012 ^ Yep. it needs to be pushed through all the gears... and the temp has to be exactly 30c otherwise the fluid is too low lol. This is why I gave up and left it to the pros!

antil33t 90 Report post Posted October 15, 2012 (edited) Integrity Automatics... $300 odd.. that wasn't including a filter, and that was a replacement pan gasket... (it leaked due to an installation f**k up) Fluid is $32/L..... for Fully Synthetic from them. Can't complain, the car works really well lol. cliffdunedin 8 Report post Posted October 15, 2012 Sweet, i'm gonna hit them up. My usual guy in Waverly is booked hard for the next 2 weeks and the 2 others i checked were charging quite a little more than that!
BM WORLD 1283 Report post Posted October 15, 2012 na just swap it out for a 5spd manual kit and maybe a m52b28 while you are at it
cliffdunedin 8 Report post Posted October 15, 2012 Lol I know! I'm up in odds at the mo to find a e36 325 or 328 or go with an e39...
NZ BMW 368 Report post Posted October 15, 2012 I would imagine it's the same for the E36, on my E39 you can't drain all of the fluid from the torque converter so they've drained and refilled and I will go back and have it drained and refilled again after about 1500km's to make sure we've got all the oil fluid out. antil33t 90 Report post Posted October 15, 2012 or they use a flushing machine lol. I'd only get it flushed if it was REAL dirty. I didn't bother as the oil wasn't burned, just looking oldish. but it should have fairly clean oil now since it's been drained twice, that's 4L each time.
