E34 540i Oil Service

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Generally I service all my own cars, but getting lazy so asked for a quote from BMW Grays in Christchurch for an oil service and I was somewhat falbergastered

Cost of oil service $390+!!! "But this is speical 25,000 km oil"...umm I thought they just used castrol oil?

Cost of brake fluid flush/bleed $100

Cost of microfilter $100

So basically a $590 oil service, brake fluid change and a cabin air filter.

Seams totally wrong to me. I reckon the oil service for top of the line oil would be no more than 160-200. Oil I use in my race car is 80/4L and sure it takes 8L, and an oil filter should be about $20.

Does this mean it cost $200 to reset a light and stamp the book?

What's your thoughts?

What's the best oil for E34 540i?

dont forget the dealership has to make it worth their while as well, no it doesnt cost them $200 to reset a light and stamp a book

so the dealership isn't the cheapest place to service your BMW, who would have guessed

Just an FYI, I can't find an E34 Microfilter ANYWHERE but the dealer. Though CHBMW only charged me $60.

Thanks for the feedback. I don't have too much of an issue with microfilter or brake fluid, I'm not sure what their labour rates are or how long it would take to do an oil service but was just surprised by the cost of an oil service. I would have expected $200-250. Above that its worth the hassle of DIY.

Before you spend you time DIY'ing why not just send it to a reputable mechanic? For me to have my car serviced which is oil, oil filter and air filter is about $350 which includes an inspection of sorts and all the stupid stuff like topping up fluids and lubing door catches etc.

No offence but as to why anyone would have an older BMW serviced at the dealer is beyond me. It's not like there is a bunch of proprietary software or tools that are needed. That goes for my E39 too.
