97 M3 EVO tidy up

Recommended Posts

well I'm almost done with the rear end of this thing. Just need to replace the front diff mount as we had a small issue with it...I was quoted about 80 odd bucks for it but turns out that was an error in the pricing guide and was ment to be about 600!!! the suppliers have said it was their mistake and will let me have it for 320+gst which I guess I'll have to pay since mine is starting to fail. Also need new diff oil then I'm good to go, so hoping for Monday I'll be driving her again!!!

heres afew pics of what ive been up to anyway

Nice work Justin!

Those rear 1/4 window seal replacements make a good deal of difference, I bought new seals but haven't bothered to replace them, this just might motivate me. haha.

Cheers Michael, got sick of looking at them making the car look shabby so now it's almost looking perfect again. Just noticed I didnt get a pic of the rear windows new trim, better put that up later

Hey Dave, I am yet to do vanos, but do have all the bits to do it. when I first got it it was abit noisy when cold but after a full service its nowhere near as bad. But I will be looking at doing it shortly, aswell as the rod bolts just for peace of mind.

With the water pump, I wasn't sure either if they're prone to failure, so changed it and the t.stat just to be safe as I didn know when they were last done.

As with the front lower arm rear bushes, they are well known for failure, as are the rear trailing arm front bushes so be best to check yours out and would recommend changing them to a powerflex bush or nolethane to stop premature failure and help with handling.

I've got a spare VANOS kit (seals, shims, and the besian systems shim install tools) for a S50B32 - so let me know if anyone wants it, i'll let it go for less than i paid for it.

so today I swapped the front diff mount to the new one, filled the diff up with Castrol saf xj from bmw-$32 a litre!!! put the schnitzers on, dropped her on the ground and went out for some fun. Oh how Ive missed her.... rear ends nice and tight now too. couldn't push too hard as it was pretty wet out, but when I did...some nice sideways action :D

Thanks Michael, hopefully now I can keep it on the road for more than a month before I find something else that needs done! But I would like to do the vanos before summer...

Hoping it's nice weather later in the week/weekend so can give her a good wash and take some good pics.

Also changing to the castrol diff fluid from the redline super lightweight shockproof has made a big difference too. Diff used to bind quite bad when turning at low speeds but has gone now.

Whoops. Any idea if it's the rear gasket or input/output seals?

So you don't feel left out, you'll be pleased to know my sump is leaking. What fun oil leaks are!

Well I've just replaced both output shafts and rear cover gasket so in theory it shouldn't be leaking. Noticed it hadn't leaked overnight tho, by it was parked uphill not down hill

Also installed a fire extinguisher in the boot just in case something goes wrong.

Mine only leaks when facing nose down on a slope.

As for fire extinguisher, did you consider the OEM mount under the passenger seat?

Hmmm. Is that just an M3 thing? :)

Hey man - loving the thread. Very inspirational.

Just wondering where you got the rear 1/4 window seals, and what the part no. is (if its not too much trouble).

The part munted here: http://bimmersport.co.nz/forums/uploads/monthly_09_2013/post-5102-0-39048600-1380345641.jpg

And lovingly replaced here: http://bimmersport.co.nz/forums/uploads/monthly_09_2013/post-5102-0-77172300-1380345664.jpg

Having trouble identifying it on realoem: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=BF92&mospid=47432&btnr=51_2060&hg=51&fg=10

Thanks so much.

Here's the diagram http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=BG92&mospid=47433&btnr=51_2060&hg=51&fg=10&hl=25

And in my pic of the wreaked rubber is part number 8, the inner window seal. But I'm guessing the very corner rubber has gone aswell which is part of the lower strip that runs along the bottom which isn't properly listed there but will look at my invoices tomorrow for it. And I got them from Schmiedmann.
