Lug Bolt to Wheel Nut Conversion

Recommended Posts

Hi guys Just bought some new wheels and was planning on using the new wheel nuts that came free with the wheels to change the Lug bolts on my BMW E30 into wheel nuts.

Was thinking that you could buy 16 bolts the same diameter and length and make them permanently stay in the hub?

Any Ideas?

Was Just wondering if anyone has done this on here?

You need to use proper wheel studs, designed for that purpose.

RRT, Vorshlag, Turner and Bimmerworld all do stud conversion kits that screw in place of your wheel bolts.

Also pay to double check this isn't a WoF or LVVTA cert. issue, as you are altering how the wheels are attached.

Alternative is to remove all the hubs from the car and have the hubs drilled out and pressed in studs inserted.

Not the best solution, if you replace a front wheel bearing on an E30, you'll need to drill out and insert new studs into the new hubs.....

use thread locker and buy studs from reputable company.

yeah thats what i was thinking, something along the line of that thread locker.

It would be better to do it properly and see if it is actually legal, as a half ass job could end up being potentially dangerous maybe?

and the centre caps, i didnt really like them so probably wont use them really a.

Ill do some more research and see if its safe and legal

Cheers guys,

Any questions or advice. ask away :)

I found these, which seem to be the best,

BUT, all the wheel nuts the use with them are endless where as the wheel nuts i got with mine are not?

Do you guys think this will still work?

Cheers

You could get the same thing over the counter at Davie Holden in Manukau... And the wheel nuts will fit if its 1.5 too. Im running a stud conversion on my e36 purely for ease of wheel removal and have had no issues.

Those are the 90mm long competiton studs!

You don't need those unless you need to run +30mm spacers, or bolt on some spinners and dice up pedestrians.

Have a look at Bimmerworld, I'm sure they have nickle plated shorter replacement studs.

Don't go half-arsed and buy generic 'studs' from the local fastening supplies store.

Remember these are for holding your wheels on, and, more importatnly keeping other road users safe.
