Sunday 24th November

I contacted Brent (forum name: Brent HARTGE535i), asking him what LSD medium case diff he’s got and price, he said he had a 3.91 and a 3.25lsd, $650 / $750, I then went on asked him if they will bolt straight onto a E30, and he said “yes, just need your e30 medium size rear cover”.

On Sun 1 December

I contacted Brent again, we agreed the price on the 3.25lsd for $600, I then went with a mate (witness) to pick it up, when I got there, I double checked with him again and I asked “So this 3.25lsd will bolt straight onto my E30 235i, all I need is the rear cover?” he replied YES. The reason I asked him a lot of question is because I’m new to doing my own cars and still learning, so I trusted him.

Wednesday 11 December

Finally I had a day off, and my mates’ garage was free to do my Diff for me on the hoist. Took the 3.25Lsd into the work shop, found out the medium rear cover doesn’t match up. Pictures below.

Felt really gutted and upset, so I gave Brent a call told him that he sold me the wrong thing and it’s not bolting up, he denied that he said all I need was my old e30 medium rear cover, as now I’ve got three witness plus text message send by him. He then went on telling me I can just pay $200 extra for someone else to install the LSD centre in my old medium case. I told him I wasn’t interested in spending more money, and said if it’s going to cost me $900 I rather get something else and buy the diff complete to save me the hassle. He then went on asked me questions about what ratio diff I was running, what gearbox I had in it, and what revs I’m sitting on when the car is doing 100km/s, started talking about technical stuff, where I have no idea what he’s talking about as I’m still learning about cars. Pretty much from what my understanding is, he doesn’t want to refund me, he’s making a excuses, and by now I was confused on what he’s talking about, so I passed the phone over to two of my mates, who’s got better knowledge, and better understanding than I do, Brent then repeated the same thing and my mate answered all his questions and said to Brent $200 might be nothing to you but to us its quite a bit of money, as earlier he was saying $200 was nothing and best If we get someone else to rebuild it, so my mate said its best if you can just refund him (me) the money, as this is not what you said it will do, he than rudely hang up on us and never called us back.

So I’m writing to let everyone know my situation and see what advice I can get to solve this problem.

You could just call him and ask if the 3.91 will fit instead, it would be better for your car anyway, it will be rather slow with a 3.25 Diff, unless you have some big ass turbo and 300whp :)

Also there are two sides to every story, being non technical you may not have understood what was required as far as installing the LSD goes.

An E30 LSD often goes for $1000 on trade me and you got $150 off the original price, so all up $800, its not that bad a price really.

As I deal with customers for a living I'm cautious about taking sides.

If you can get it to me in Hamilton i'll swap the lsd case into yours for a box. I'm assuming the current ratio isn't that favorable though

Otherwise I can show you some photos and instructions to do it yourself.

Charles different gearboxes have different ratios. Big turbo has nothing to do with it

Good point, i see hes got an M50B25 engine, if its got the gearbox that comes with the M50 engine then it would be a good diff ratio to match that gearbox, but with the stock M20B25 gearbox (Get rag 260) it would be doing quite low RPM at 100k with that 3.25 and would be slower 0-100 etc

Planning to use the 3.25 LSD diff for drifting (well learn anyway :P). , as ive done a little research and 3.25 is alright for drifting?

and yup i have the old m20b25 260 box and ive got a m50b25 engine :)

yeah should be all good still, I prefer that ratio with the ZF gearbox myself, but it will still be fine for sure.

Already you have more power and torque then stock, so it should do quite well i'd imagine

Have a read of this post, this person had exactly the same issue your having now.

That 3.25 diff looks like a small case diff not a medium case. If it were a medium the rear cover would fit, As it stands the rear cover will not fit and neither will the LSD center as its a small case center.

Well when i called up Brent he was certain that was a Medium case LSD diff.

Ok i just read whats Charles have posted, and seems like Brent gave me a E28 Small case LSD diff?
