kdalton 9 Report post Posted June 29, 2015 (edited) Hey guys so I have an automatic year 2000 E46 318i and it's been playing up. It has no power an struggles to rev past 4000rpm (when accelerating) it can rev around 5500rpm in neutral. It also holds the gears if my foot is flat untill I let go then it will change. I'm starting my process of elimination so would like any advice as to what is causing all this. Cheers. Edited June 29, 2015 by kdalton
_ethrty-Andy_ 2132 Report post Posted June 29, 2015 (edited) when was the last time you changed your transmission fluid? if its more than a few years, or you dont know, change it for a start, you need to anyways, and can start diagnosing after that. Edit: your car may have a "sealed for life" transmission, total garbage. as above, change the fluid, it is 15 years old now Edited June 29, 2015 by _Ethrty-Andy_
kdalton 9 Report post Posted June 29, 2015 Yeah I've only had this car 6 months so don't know the last time it was changed. I'll do that then come back with an update.
_ethrty-Andy_ 2132 Report post Posted June 29, 2015 also make sure you use the right fluid or tell the garage that will be doing it, I'd recommend going to either BMW or Page European and get them to. Don't be scared of "dealer/specialist prices" higher per hour yes, but they know what they are doing so the repairs are quicker and you know they will use the correct fluid. BM WORLD 1283 Report post Posted June 29, 2015 unplug the maf and see if it revs out . cats ?? undo a bolt plug in the manifold before the cats and see if it revs out . maybe undo and the flanges and look into them with a bright light. see if they rattle heaps when you bang them

kdalton 9 Report post Posted June 30, 2015 (edited) Additional info, it will make a splutter type sound out the exhaust sometime. When my foot is flat it will stop around 4000rpm and not change gears.. I have to drive in tiptronic most the time now. It doesn't stop at 4000rpm just acts normal when it's not moving in neutral or park. Plus the acceleration is pathetic probably the slowest car in the world. kdalton 9 Report post Posted July 6, 2015 For anyone interested the problem turned out to be the camshaft position sensor.
