E46 M3 SMG...Who knew....

Recommended Posts

After all this time I never knew that if you held the gear lever forward (or back) while turning off the engine the car stays in gear when stopped...who knew that?

Sounds like something that might be in the owners manual?

It's launch control procedure (the turning off the engine part isn't, you are suppose to hold the brake and floor the throttle, let go of the lever and hold on)... it's in the manual.

If you are on a hill, pull the downshift paddle back and it'll hold it for hill start.

Yeh thanks for all of the 'other' incorrect information - Tom. As for the SMG hater, a clutch is only good for dropping. Some of us don't get off on mistreating our cars.

I thought if you don't put it in neutral before turn off the engine, it will stays in gear and won't roll away. And that you need to move the lever to neutral in order to start the engine.

That's what I do in a non-M3 SMG (e46 330Ci) that I had.

And that beeping noise on turn off is a reminder to either return the level to r or 1 position

Others

On s1-s4 you can drop 2 or three gears by tapping the downshift paddle in quick succession (RPM dependant)

S1 mode ignores 1st gear on takeoff to limit wheel torque on slippery surfaces

S6 mode is only avavailbe with DSC off on normal M3s

CSL tune allows full engine torque on gear changes rather than slight reduction on standard smg or half second delay on manual ( interesting enough antadoataly csl are less prone to subframe tearing)

Later mcoupe smg software load has smoother auto mode changes ( running this on my 2002 )
