Turbo issues/rattling wastegates are the main expensive one I believe.

Get a BMW specialist to do an inspection, and consider an aftermarket warranty if a $3000 or so repair bill sounds scary.

Well if you find it too small after trying one, just go for a 335i instead :D

They're still good fun, 335i coupe fits two people in the back comfortably as well. 1 series is a bit of a squeeze I believe.

135i is a bit faster and more aggressive handling due to it's size from what I've read although I've never actually tried one.

dont get me wrong i am 6 3 and with the seat down i could find a very comfortable driving position, however the seat behind me was really cramped.Mine was a hatch,120 d great handling, steering and braking really fun car, practical too,in the end i sold it because it was just a wee bit small

  • check to see if factory recall was done on the HPFP
  • wastegate rattle
  • waterpump

also if you buy one - get a walnut blast done on the intakes to clean all the gunk and get a OCC for the car straight away

but best bet is to get a bmw specialist to do a pre-inspection on it

If a recall wasn't done, couldn't you just bring the car to a BMW NZ dealership to get it done?

The HPFP is only a problem for US spec cars not Euro spec cars including the recall. Waterpump, turbos and oil leaks are weak points.

oh cool. what other problems have cropped up in your engine?

Vacuum lines, leaking diverter valves and low pressure fuel sensor. These problems only showed after added a tune. If you are handy with a wrench then the only thing you need to worry about is the turbos and even they can be replaced on a pair of jackstands in your driveway.

DIY on these cars is recommended as the parts are not really expensive its the labour that gets you. For example I had a leaking gasket in the oil filter housing. The gasket is $10. But to get the OFH off you need to drain the coolant. To drain coolant you need to remove the intercooler. Then just for a laugh BMW engineers decided to place one of the OFH bolts behind the intake manifold. So off comes the manifold. Thats a good time to pour some ISO alcohol in the intake valves and scrub them clean.

FYI i would avoid doing the walnut blasting. Previous owner did it on my 335 and there are left over remnants all over the engine. And anecdotally the shells can end up plugging the ports in the valve cover. So save some money and DIY with a wire brush, rags and ISO alcohol.

I recently bought a 135 coupe and when I checked the service history I noted that the HPFP had been replaced around the 4 year mark.

Spac is tight in the back but better that you might think, but then I am not sitting there! I'd also buy the warranty even if you get an immaculate car if its not under the factory warranty.

Sounds like the previous walnut job was not done correctly - there should be no remnants left what so ever if done correctly....

Would love to see pics of the intakes via the wirebrush method

No arguments from me there should be no remnants leftover. When i opened it up it was only about 20k kms since the walnut blast and it was pretty black and mucky in there. I didnt take good pics as I was in a hurry to get it done that day and plan to open it up again and do a more thorough job. But here you go have a look how black it is in there!

Am assuming no OCC was installed after the clean?

I really should open mine again to see how it looks since the clean and the OCC was installed - have put around 40K+ since the initial clean

Nope no occ. An occ is not gong to do anything to keep carbon build up on the valves it just helps keep oil out of the ic and charge air passageway. Carbon is a side effect of exhaust gases. Only way to stop this is to port the valve cover.

Apparently rob beck in the us is coming up with a kit to do this. Otherwise you can diy it there is s guy on e90post done it but he's crazy is so ott lol
