e28 ( Chasis modication Question)

Recommended Posts

Hey Everyone,

As some people know i have started doing an e28 turbo project (running gt42), i have run into some serious problem with space on exhaust manifold side due to size of turbo

1. Engine mount gets in way of manifold i had designed (turbo was going to be side mounted on right hand side in battery box area otherwise hits the hood if top mounted)

Anyway this is a question about modifying the chassis to make it all fit easier or i have to do some serious thinking on how to do it.

Question: Pic 1 - Would i get away with cutting this out and re-boxing (which would give a lot of extra space and figure if done right would be just as strong) or is this to much in the way of modifications that it would have to be re-certified or done by a professional (which i don't have cash to do)

Any ideas are welcome but the e28 chassis has no space compared to other models

You could also take a look at what crunchy did in his M50 E34, by standing the motor up a little more you can open up some more space.

You may also need to think about having the turbo mounted high and forward where there is some space.

If it's a road car talk to the person certifying it. Or post on oldschool forums- theres a topic for cert questions. I think something like it was asked a couple of weeks ago

I think that you may need to rethink.

You are saying that you can't afford to go through the cert processes, yet you are performing a turbo swap in your car.

It already needs a cert if you are going to turbo.  Find a cert inspector that you can work with and talk to them. They will have the final say as to what you can and can't do.

Go check out old school .Yes there have been two questions about mods like this recently. One from MM when mateja was fitting the radiator in to his m30 swapped e28. The thread is 100s of pages long so just go to the end then back 10 pages and you should find something.

ive done a turbo + engine for this model.

nope, not much room in between the rails, but with creativity i managed to

fit both top and bottom mount hairdryers with room to spare over the years.

the down and wastegate pipes are the trickiest.

current setup has to be the simplest. not the most efficient, i confess, but for

a few hp's lost was made up for ease and everything unbolts etc easily

i could be enticed to part with my current setup........comes with cert

might save you several months + fustration
