Worksie 22 Report post Posted June 21, 2017 Took my recently acquired 2004 530d for a trip from Hamilton to Wellington today. Travelled 505.8 kms, and used not quite half a tank of diesel. Had cruise on as much as possible. Open road speed was set at 100 km/ph. The trip computer ended up sitting on 6.4 ltrs per 100 kms. Was a very comfortable trip too, and the 'comfort spec' seats certainly proved their worth. I particularly like the extendable thigh support squab. I am very happy with my car. Graeme 5 series roadie ftw.Thats impressive economy.Prolly be evn better if the cruise wasnt on use a lot of fuel trying to maintain 100 k on the hills. You might even get back to Hamilton on the same tank
gjm 3258 Report post Posted June 21, 2017 Good work. I'd be interested to hear if you got much more than 300km from the second 'half' of the tank?

Olaf 3317 Report post Posted June 22, 2017 Yeah I was going to suggest 1050kms. I guess that's because I was investigating oil burners recently. Graham, it could be the e46 tank featuring the 'drop like a rock' float.

Seems a common problem across many manufacturers actually - the use of a seemingly inverted pyramid for the fuel tank, with an uncorrected 'dip-stick' to measure what's left. The 318i will comfortably do 500km on a half tank. but is showing a low fuel light soon after 800kms. (65l tank - I rarely get more than 60l in it.) Haven't had the Ti long enough to work that out yet, but yes - the E46 does something similar.

allan 295 Report post Posted June 23, 2017 MMM very interesting would be interested to know what size the tank is and if you get your 1050k. Then what it cost for the fuel plus the ruc to give you a total to do the ks?. Then compare it with a petrol model for comparison obviously it would take the petrol more than a tank full but $$ wise how close would they be?. Driftit 2078 Report post Posted June 24, 2017 I got just over 1100kms out of a tank in my old 530d. From just North of Chch via Kaikora, Wellington, Masterton, Palmy, Taupo bypass, Auckland. I think we filled up just past Matamata somewhere. By that stage I had forgotten it needed fuel. I do wonder how far you could get on these roads in the US though. Flat and straight. Though you are going faster. If the limit is 65mph. Everyone does 80mph.
gjm 3258 Report post Posted June 24, 2017 15 hours ago, allan said: ... would be interested to know what size the tank is... I think the E60 530d tank is 70l. So 15-16km/l will give 1050km on a tank.
