Painting bumpers

Recommended Posts

Firstly whose done this before ...

I've got 2 sets of bumpers here right now and I'm looking at colour coding one set for daily and re-surfacing some scuffs / painting the other set as it has a few blemishes or rather minor scuffs etc from previous owners professional touch parking. The 2nd set will be for track use.

Did you DIY or get it professionally done ?

What are the costs involved. Any specific type of paint addidive that should be used ?

Cheers

Andy

Done a few in my time, the important bit is I used a special plastic primer before applying the top coats. But that was a while ago (+-6yrs) so not sure if the modern paints eliminate the need for this primer. Go and ask a specialist paint shop...

thanx Will and co, yeah I had a feeling you had to use some such primer. I will take the car down to local car painters and see what I can find out. Did some photochopping and would look mint colourcoded :)

my black bumpers were already primered a very dark gray

so make sure yours are just raw plastic before you put the plastic primer on otherwise it just screws up the primer on it already..

thing to watch out for is silicone left on your bumper, the paint will never stick.

am still to find out the best way to get rid of any silicone.

Be sure to use etch primer to bond to the plastic properly. then you are away.
