topnotchrally 107 Report post Posted November 18 What car is this from? Will it fit a Z3 2.8? Thanks.
modz 148 Report post Posted November 18 It would as the Z3 is based on an E36 chassis and the purple tags are from E36/E46 chassis, BUT the Z3 should be a blue tag in which case there's not much benefit for you.

Yes, thank you for your observation. I am only thinking of changing because my local WOF shop is, I believe, overly zealous and have said my rack may fail soon because of 'end play'. This seems crazy to me as it only has 135k kms on it. This is a bit off topic, but is this 'end play' a known issue? My 318i has >250k kms and it passes fine. modz 148 Report post Posted November 18 Seems rather OTT. I've had 300km+ cars with no rack change. There's not much inside the racks so it could actually be your inner tie rod rather than the rack itself.
jom 98 Report post Posted November 18 My rack (at 240k) failed the wof on play in the rack - seems to be a new thing. The teeth in the centre of the rack get worn and cause the play. I went through 3 secondhand racks - all worse than mine - before I found one with less wear. Now I've got a purple tag rack, which apart from being a bit quicker, is proportional rather than being slower around straight ahead.
_ethrty-Andy_ 2136 Report post Posted November 28 i have put three e46 through wof recently, all three with advisories only on steering racks. plenty of e30s etc as well. They just arent as tight as modern cars, and the new wof techs that dont know the old stuff dont know .
