BMWDees 0 Report post Posted February 21 Heya, i got a 2012 X5 35D e70 with 119000kms on the clock and wanting to know what can be done to get better mileage. Mileage is averaging at 9.9Km/L Would a DPF clean or walnut carbon clean be beneficial or should i be looking at other things to replace, upgrade due to age etc? I'm based in Auckland
balancerider 799 Report post Posted February 21 That sounds about right for an E70 on an urban driving cycle, two tons of not very aerodynamic SUV with 4WD will struggle to do much better than that unless driven on open road
str8_6 277 Report post Posted February 22 Similar to what I get in the 40d. Been sitting at 9.3 l/100km recently, but it’s doing a bit more motorway mileage. 16 l/100 towing 2.5t isn’t too bad either.

There’s lots of things you can replace / service / check that would help, but with the price of diesel and the gain you would get it’s borderline if it stacks up. Basics would be check condition of the air filter, fuel filter and EGR valve. Walnut blast (and clean out inlet manifold whilst in there) can help but is not cheap. A good long hot run to burn some of the crap out including the DPF can sometimes do wonders. At 119K it shouldn’t need injector clean or servicing unless it’s smoking badly.
