South African e30 325i

About two or three months ago I picked up this: Posted Image

I then went through the process of stripping out the 320 in preparation for sale (remove springs and sounds basically) and began modding the 325. I sold the 320 a little over a week ago for very close to what I was asking and finally had a chance to polish the 325 and put up some pics.

Original Specs when purchased: 1990 325i imported from South Africa

195000kms

Auto

Leather interior (BMW Sport)

Cruise control

Longrange fuel tank

Sunroof

Sump guard

Front and rear sway bars

Maintenance undertaken immediately after purchase:

Cambelt, waterpump, camshaft seal.

Flush and replace coolant.

oil change

new plugs

new motor mounts

new gearbox mounts

new power steering rack

new tierod end LHS

new front wheel bearings

new brake pads and machined rotors

dyed black parcel tray

a couple of days cutting and polishing to remove massive paint damage on bonnet.

replace countless bulbs and fix various little things like jerky windscreen wipers etc. Someone had got a vivid and blacked out the seatbelt warning light on the check panel!!!!!

Mods to date (October 2008):

Manual conversion - Getrag 260 5spd with Luk Clutch and z3 1.9 shortshift

remove gay unsheilded pod filter and replace with stock airbox and k&n panel

6-2-1 exhaust. 2.25" with coby and stainless DTM-style rear box.

Revalved Bilstein Sport dampers (new) with shortened bumpstops.

H&R Sport springs (35mm drop). Lowest chassis or suspension component is ~120mm.

Powerflex Purple Urethane Suspension bushes all round (except on trailing arms).

Genuine Mtech II bodykit

Alpine MP3 head unit powering JVC 6.5" rear two-ways and into Rebranded Caliber CA475+ 4ch amp

Infinity 6000CS front splits on two channels. Pioneer 12" TS-w306C single voice coil sub (600W RMS) on two bridged channels in custom ported box tuned to 38Hz.

Dynatron D7800 alarm dual immobilisers, keyless entry, and "presence sensor" (So I dont have to push the button to disarm the immobilisers - it knows the keys are in the car).

Smoked all-red tails and smoked front and side repeaters

Black Kidney Grill

Shadowlined window trim

Smiley ellipsoids

17" BBS RB replica rims running Dunlop SP Sport Maxx's

Red instrument needles

Euro plate

Mods to come:

Re-design sub enclosure for weight saving.

Uprated sway bars (maybe) - wallet still burning from the urethane sway bushes.

Front and rear strut braces (maybe - still not convinced these are necessary on a street car with current power)

Minor cosmetic improvements

Researching re-power options. So many options! 200kw please!

Oh and while I'm here - I picked up this a week or two later - it's now on 33" mud tyres, is fully kitted out for off road including high-speed winch, higH-lift jack, snatch straps, block pulley, CB & UHF radios (to be installed), full recovery gear, fire extinguishers, the works. Is a 2.8 turbo diesel, came complete with lift kit, rims and tyres you see in the pic, rims and mud tryes that are now on it, full all-round bullbars, all round off-road tow hooks, snorkel, and roll cage from the b-pillar back. The white canopy is removable and have a soft-top for it, have heaps of spares, and it eats mud like it's going out of fashion - expect some proper off-road pics to come.

It is a joint venture with my Dad as we broke (temporarily) his vintage 1942 Willy's so it was time to buy something tougher. This thing performs offroad really well and has been scrutineered and is a class 4 vehicle (out of 5 classes) This means it has all the gear required for competition, but isn't a specialist vehicle/buggy with independant brakes etc.

Cost to buy - $1500

Cost of mods to date - $1000 (not including winch - that is a freebie in exchange for free rent of our boat-building shed which works out at $1500 if we had collected the rent)

Any opinions on whether or not to shadowline the window trim? I find the chrome brings out the wheels, but with my current plans to black all the lights same as the tails, maybe an all-black look is the go?

been hanging round Gus too long Graham.. look what its done.

re. chrome adds balance, I say keep it. I dunno about installing shadowline trim, but chrome trim is hard to get off without bending it.. and iyou will never be able to get that original shape back.

If I shadowline I'll do it with sign-writers vinyl so I don't have to remove the trims - although those trims are the easy ones to remove - its the ones on the actual doors that are hard to do without bending them and F/L have them shadowlined already - its some pre-f/l that have the actual door trims chromed.

Chrome, is way more bling and it looks better. Dont have an all black car. Matching chrome bumpers and trim. Incl the ones round the front and rear screen, when all done, it looks so much nicer on a black car.

looks sweet mate, get that young guy blak bma 2 photo shop your car to what ever you want h did a good job on my 4door

It is a SA model, has a sump guard..

those window strips are easy to get off without damaging them btw.

Yup - I cracked the sump when I was jacking up the motor to replace the motor mounts and the motor mount caught as I was lifting (without me knowing). When it freed itself, the motor shifted in a hurry to rebalance itself, slipped slightly on the jack and the sump cracked. Was a $40 welding job and a $25 gasket so no harm done.

The sump guard is a tricky one - it is alot lower than the sump so I scrape it alot. If it wasn't there I wouldn't scrape at all, but then again if I did hit something - bye,bye sump.

So it stays on. My 320 was this low and I'm used to the height now - can spot a bump that will cause a problem from a mile off, so bumps and scrapes are only at crawling speed. It's not a problem really - only on rural driveways and the like with big humps down the middle.

And for those who skipped straight down to here, I have sussed my camera now and so have replaced the horrible blurry side view in the first post with a new, clear, shadowlined and reapeater-tinted one.

Bro your car looks tough as graham.

Not far away from finishing my car mate. Still just waiting on extractors and exhaust and gearbox crossmember then she'll be done.

f**k it's costing me though but oh well she'll be good in the end. Will cruise up straight away once it's done.
