hey i was just wondering does an auto e30 drive shaft fit if i put a manual box in? will it be the right length cheers

No, the front half is longer on the manual, because the box is shorter. You only need a replacement on the front half. the back half is the same.

I'd try to get the manual front shaft with the conversion kit if possible, they can be hard to find.

And if you are to swap the driveshaft from another car, the Pre-facelift and the facelift driveshaft carriers are different.

And you should really try to get the whole prop shaft from the manual, not just the front half.

I forget how many times its been said, but the prop shaft is balanced as a complete unit. If you replace half the shaft with one from a different car it will need to be rebalanced.

If you are careful the carriers can be swapped over between driveshafts to get around facelift/pre f/l differences

But How could it be balanced as a unit.. what about when you swap the g box or the rear end and you dont get it on the exact spline..

The 2 halves of the driveshaft and the centre bearing are balanced, doesn't matter what spline it goes on. Driveshaft specialists can rebalance for you if you take the assembly with the donut to them.

You are supposed to mark the driveshaft halves before you pull it apart so you can put it back together the same. a couple of splines out won't make much of a difference, but if your universals aren't in phase you'll wear them out pretty quick and add vibrations, and if they are in phase, but 180 degrees out you may also get vibration.

If you don't have any driveline vibration and the u-joints are in phase then don't worry about it.
