My Auto slips out of gear when its hot

Recommended Posts

I have an auto 1990 e34 535i its the first auto i have owned and will probably be the last,

Anyway the gearbox was working fine, i have done about 3 long 1500km weekend trips no problem, sports mode is mean to overtake with, however a few weeks ago as i was in the lower north island where its got large hills, my brother was driving and i noticed the car was reving quite high for ages up a hill, i had a go at him about that but he seemed to think it was not anything more than the gearbox chose that gear. then just as i was about to have 40 winks it jumped out of gear and hit red line.

We looked and it was in D, yet it slipped out, so after pulling over and letting it cool off i kicked him out the driver seat and took the wheel agian, i managed to drive in 3 for about 10 min before i tried D and once in Drive it was unhappy about changing back into 3 as we hit a hill. We stopped so i could throw a wobbly( and let it cool down) and after 25min we left again and i stayed in 3 i made it form hunterville to welli about 240kms sweet but i would have to stop every 50km to reset the gearbox.

When i was all but 15kms form home i slammed my foot down in a fit of rage and it went man she went and after i had dropped my nutz from the excessive speed i couldnt believe it didnt jump out.

It was sweet around welli for a week,

Then i went up north again thinking maybe it was just a scare, however just out of rotorua i got a message trans prog and lost my switch display, and it was slipping again, we stopped cooled it off and drove slowly to vegas.

after a while of cooling it down i made it to the Mount (tauranga) without an issue, so i had my uncles mate change the ATF and it was semi black and smelt burnt. we also gave it a treatment from Wimms and we put it down and it went sweet af for the rest of the weekend even when i gave it a good go to test it.

But wait theres more,

I left in the arvo and it was very hot the car temp read 33 degrees on the On Board computer that dropped down to 29 when we started rolling, we didnt even get 30 kms slowly in sunday drive mode before it slipped.

It must have been heat related, i got to whakatane and cooled it down for ages and it was fine but it came back again and i noticed a slight belt squeek as it slipped, so after checking the belts to see they were all fine i cooled it down and headed off again, i headed home thinking i mgiht get my older e28 manual back on the road cause its all but ready.

When we got to welli after the longest drive ever with the most stops ive ever had i noticed the gear shifter was hot and i guess its a heat problem.

Lastnight i gave it a good burn when i just started it and yet again fine,

Querstions

When i turn it off and start it agian it resets something ? what?

Would over heating cause it to slip?

the TRANS program selector switch played up and wouldnt get out of S mode before all this started could that have been a sign?

any answers would be great, id like to think i can get maybe a few more months befre i make my mistake right and convert it to manual.

Cheers in advance

unless you had your gearbox rebuilt recently - then its time to get it done! the car is 16 years old and nothing last forever!

Apparently it had been rebuilt a few years ago, and i have the reciepts for that, the guy i got it off said to me he had it rebuilt about 4 months ago when it wouldnt go into reverse.

FLag rebuilting an auto, id rather have a manual, unless there is a quick fix that wont cost as much
