Thinking about retiring the E30

Recommended Posts

Guest Spargo

I'm not sick of the E30, just tired of driving it every day into town etc etc and on errands, and i'd like something less special to thrash about in everyday.

I'm leaning toward an E36 of some description, has to be a smalish coupe though, so no chance of an E39 or bigger. Any suggestions? Up to 20K.

Also, how does either classic insurance or limited milage insurance work? We'd be talking c.5000kM a year.

I asked AA about classic insurance for my Mini, limited to 5000km per year, full cover, full NCD, park in garange, agreed value of $3500 and cost $85 per year. They say other than milage, there's no difference from the normal insurance.

Smallish coupe, how about another E30? :P

Does it has to be a bimmer? Bimmer coupe don't get much smaller than a e30.

(there's 2002 and e21, but that's getting a bit silly as a daily car)

Needs a bigger engine - already spent 2 years tooling round in one.

a 3.2L would appeal

I think I've got this right, you want to give up DD a $14K 2.7L car and use a $20K 3.2L car?

Quiet turbo boy :D , the 2.7 uses more fuel, is less comfortable round town, has less effective heating, I don't like driving her 450K a week - I'd rather save her for special occasions, and have her off the road for a kinda serious resto this year.

The 3.2L was a bit of a joke, but if you point me in the right direction...

Or with the 'spare change' you could spend getting totally shitfaced, [that'll make the 'Echo' look good]

why not the m3 20G youd own one.

not to bad on gas ether.

If i can commit such car crimes as letting the missis drive mine more than i do and using one as a family car then you could use one as a dd.

RE insurance

classiccover.co.nz is who you want

Turbo insured for 16k, Racecar at 35 (and at the time) a 325 tech2 cost me 983 a year fully comp.

Now that would really piss you off, climbing in thru the cage and doing those belts up every time you get in.

This is the kinda suggestion I like. Within the price range too.

What IS mileage like round town on an Evo M3 anyway? I know a couple young guys own them here.

12-13.5l/100k around town. 9.5-10.0l/100kph on the open road.

Bloody good considering the performance on tap.

I guess they kind of lapped over, like how you can get a '98 e36 or a '98 E46 and same kind of thing with E30 and E36.

But yeah the wagon is wicked, not to mention cheap as! and a Tech 2 vert is always hot
