Apparently the car ran over an object which shattered the wheel and impacted the right rear trailing arm assembly as car passed over it. Brakes locked on causing rotor damage and then halted by slamming into rear of a truck deck which took out the left side at windscreen height thru to the B pillar. The passenger whom luckily was not in the car on this occasion and was spared decapitation. The drivers airbag saved his/her life. I have many shattered replica rims show up these days. All the more reason to spend the extra $$ for OEM/ Genuine or forged mags.

I have fixed the SR for good. Back to old faithful M42......but now with proper boost. Better pics and such when I have time, busy preparing it for the Mattara Hillclimb this October long weekend. I am running in the club day event on the Monday because all my mates are but anyway. So Basic Specs: BMW M42 (1.8L 4 Cylinder) CP Pistons ARP Rod Bolts, Main Studs, Oversize Headstuds O-ringed Head and Block, Copper Headgasket Cat Cams, VAC Motorsport Springs and Retainers Custom Rear Sump Garret GT3076R, 0.63 Rear Housing, Tial MVR 44 on custom Manifold DTA S60 still running the show Fuel Cell, 2 x 044's, 1600 Bosch Injectors and a bunch of other supporting mods. I have changed to a Getrag G260 (325i trans) overdrive transmission and a 3.46 rear end, this is good for a touch over 200 in 4th and should mean I don't have to change to 5th at Wakefield. There has been a whole pile of background developments but they are for later. Right now I am going to drive the wheels off this thing and put the development program on hold, I am well sick of wrenching. __________________________________________________ _______________ Made it through the first event not without drama but I made it! -coming home from scrut Thursday night got a flat tyre on the trailer (not so fun) - Friday morning same wheel feel off trailer, broken stub axle! - Monday morning rip exhaust off car trying to get off borrowed trailer. Got it patched up just in time for first run. - Second run intercooler pipe comes off, hmmm did that on dyno, reassemble should be sweet. - Third run, nope off it goes again. - Fourth run all apples, rigged up some dodgy tie straps to the inlet. Obviously this turbo setup was never going to be super awesome for a Hillclimb, add in that I had installed a 3.46 diff to suit Wakefield and Eastern Creek and it wasn't super pleasant. But I am pleased to have had a day out, simple easy to fix dramas and it came home straight and ready to go again, more than can be said for a number of cars that were competing also. http://youtu.be/_js2ubNPhkc Got some sweet pics too

It's because I live in Ponsonby, mate. It rains scented Evian here. Steam cleaning's very effective but best done by a pro IMO. I usually claim I've got an unidentified oil leak and get my mechanic to clean up for diagnosis

I agree with what you're saying Josh - I just think in this case there's more to it that a wheel 'not taking an impact'. Its much like people that put cheap & nasty tyres on a car, (& it really grates at me when its a performance / luxury / high end model that they're doing it on) - 4 little contact points that are the difference potentially between 'life & death', & we're just fitting cheap $hit??? Makes no sense in my world...........

Apparently the seller has someone very interested and will confirm by Friday. If the other person doesn't pick it up, I've spoken to Ray (what a legend, extremely good pricing compared to what the seller had quoted to him and quite clearly knows his sh!t!) who's happy to take a look at it for me early next week. Fingers crossed this other guy doesn't buy it - in which case it's likely I'll be picking it up next weekend. If no go.. then I'll keep looking! Kyu's 330 looks promising, but there's a few things I'd need to follow up with him on if I were to go that way (Kyu - don't want to hassle you or waste your time, so I havent gotten back to you re; that email. I'll definitely keep in touch if things here don't work out and you're still looking to sell ). Thanks everyone for their help so far - this forum has been nothing but friendly and contains a wealth of knowledge and fantastic people. Things are looking good - here's hoping I'm a happy BMW owner again in 2 weeks time.

Yep porosity and casting defects are huge problems in slap-bang production of cheap parts. When I did my engineering degree, one of my lecturers was a world expert in metallurgy used to show us items which he was sent from companies to test and assess. These included cast control arms and other suspension parts from the top German manufacturers whose ostensibly quality parts were rubbish when cut open.

Thanks for this info! Will definitely take this into account now that I think how important this really is.

I don't agree with that because in the case of the wheels that have been replicated here, the real M3 wheels are forged .. Cast non flow formed wheels are not strong at all. This is the worst kind of breakage .. the supporting spokes just not holding up to the impact. I unfortunately fell into the trap of buying expensive wheels that I thought were strong when they weren't, just expensive wheels from Malaysia that looked good but that's it. I hit 2 pot holes and had then repaired and finished twice until I was on a trip to wellington and clipped a curb (my own fault) the wheel just bent. After that I bought forged wheels. Had all of the same issues again accept the wheels didn't even flinch. If you think about it, your wheels are a very structural part of your car. There are too many road hazards out there to gamble it away on badly made wheels and roll the dice that you and others who have made the mistake ignorantly coming for a ride come out of it alive. I know that sound all a bit melodramatic. But this and many other examples I've seen go through rays' shop have opened my eyes a little bit more over the years.
