Interesting take from someone in the supercar scene. I absolutely despise much of the new tech in current vehicles. Distracting, gimmicky and already out of date.

After 10 months of ownership and fairly constant wrenching on the car I thought I better start a thread to document and discuss the on-going project. Shout out to @Sammo and his thread for the inspiration!! My first car was a Lachssilber 1987 M325i so have always had a soft spot for the Mtech 1 e30’s. Would have been a lot cheaper if I had kept it rather than selling it for $6k back in 2014… crazy how much the market has changed since then. Side note, if anyone has any info on that car I would love to hear where it’s at and how it’s going. Rego was NF9539. Current goal with the car is to use it semi daily / on going project. I have already done a fair bit to the car over the last 10 months which I will list below. The plan is to document as I tick jobs off the list and will also be posting breakdowns of work I have already carried out along with photos. Things completed: Engine / Trans: Cambelt / water pump / tensioner / cam seal / accessory belts / air filter Valve cover gasket / Valve adjustment / spark plugs Engine mounts Oil filter / oil pan gasket New OE fuel lines / filter / pump / fuel regulator Clean and rebuild injectors New OE coolant hoses / coolant reservoir / level sensor / thermostat New OE vacuum lines / intake boot New OE Distributor Rotor / Distributor Cap / spark plug cables New gaskets: intake manifold / throttle body / thermostat housing etc Z3 shifter Manual Transmission Mounts Shifter cup / Washers for Shifter Linkage Derlin rear bushing carier / Derlin shifter bushings Suspension / steering: New Bilstein B8 Sport dampers / Eibach Pro-Kit performance lowering springs Shock housing refurb / hubs / brake pads and rotors Purple tag rack / custom power steering lines New control arms / tie rods / bushings / drop links / sway bar bushings Front subframe stripped and repainted Exterior: Window seals Repaint shadow line trim / grill / plastics Brand new OEM tail lights 15" basketweave refurb: paint stripped / lips cleaned up / repaint Centre caps: paint stripped / repaint (New BMW emblems yet to be stuck on) Interior: New OEM style shift boot New driver door handle / surrounds / sunroof crank Lots of things to come with the car, most notably a full new interior re-upholstery. Have the kit ready to be installed (in all its OEM houndstooth glory)

Talk to a local radiator repair shop. They can usually clean the inside of tanks out and treat the inside

So much harder to find them in this condition and unmodified, it’s been pampered by the 3 private owners, always garaged and drives impressively well considering its age (smooth and tight). There are few imperfections, but honestly they are so minor I get compliments all the time about its condition. Bought this to enjoy on the weekend and only gets driven a few times a month, but have had an opportunity to purchase an M3 of this vintage and can’t keep both. Most likely if you are looking at this, you know what it is, so will just overview the main points: BMW 330ci 2001 (170,000) - $9500 - NZ New - Genuine Motorsport - Top spec - Service history - Full leather - Folding seats - Cruise control - Multifunction steering wheel - AUX upgrade to connect to phone - Brand new windscreen - Recent service - All books/manuals and 2 keys Questions and offers welcome, viewing in Silverdale or Viaduct/CBD If you need the plate, please txt me (0211706651) TM: https://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/bmw/auction-5013061653.htm

That video popped up on my algorithm too. Worth a watch and I agree with the sentiment (so the youtube algorithm is clearly working well). I think part of it also down to out-sourcing, out of necessity (cost), the development of the software that underpins the technology and probably there is some element of rushing the delivery of said software too, lack of testing etc. Add to that designers who are catering to a demographic that seems to value size and bling and shiny screens over quality and engineering prowess and you have all the variables of a poor outcome.

Hi all, Been a while since I've posted here. My other project is still a work in progress, however decided to put that on hold and start a new project that's more suitable for family life! I'll update here, more as a journal for myself to look back on. Recently I picked up Malachite Green Touring on trademe that had partly been stripped out - no engine, gearbox, diff and the interior was very average but a good chassis and base to work from. the plan was to tidy up the paint, fix up the interior and pop an engine in it - likely an M40/42 and keep it fairly stock. As it was missing a bunch of bits, it would have been a fairly slow job collecting what was needed and getting bits and pieces done. Things changed when this Lagune Green Touring popped up a few days later that had almost every single part I needed, including a stroked 2.8L engine, gearbox, LSD, black door cards, nice rear seats, touring specific carpet/boot panels, and some body panels I needed. I couldn't say no to that! Unfortunately the chassis is probably beyond repair, but this was worth it to me in the parts alone. First job was to stocktake what's there. I created an excel sheet of everything so I can keep track of what I need of which car. E.g. Valance off Lagune, Bonnet off Malachite, front seats off Malachite, rear seats off Lagune etc. Once I got both cars to one location, the strip down began. Decided to go for a full panel and paint but keep the Malachite colour - I've never seen an E30 in this colour before and love it! Having the two cars together meant I can compare parts side by side and pick the best parts. Currently waiting on my painter to free up his current jobs so we can move onto this set. While that happens, we're waiting for engine parts to arrive (water pumps, hoses etc) to get the engine in Lagune running again, as it's been sitting for about a year. Fingers crossed there's no major issues as it's been rebuilt not that long ago. Worst case I have a spare M40 which can go in. Due to time, I can only visit the cars one day every couple weeks, but will be working on cleaning up some of the parts (carpets/Door Cards/Smiley Lights) in the Lagune that I will keep in the final build at home to keep be busy between visits. I'll be needing some recommendations - first up is a decent headlining restorer - based in Auckland/South Auckland that can do work on site. Windscreen will be getting replaced and sunroof swapped out for a fibreglass panel so would be good to get it done at the same time. I'd like to get a period correct material and ideally someone that's done this on an E30 before. Will post more as I get along!
