The car will not normaly fail to operate due to a faulty MAF. If the MAF is faulty you will need the exact same MAF by part #. Unplug the MAF and try starting it. If it won't start, the fault is not the MAF. Where are you located ?

A waste of time on an E30. Everything must be basicaly checked manualy which takes time & a professional would not do this for free. You get very little info from the DME on a E30

You can't buy genuine BMW new... I've been down that track for several E30's with the help of BMW NZ Parts Distribution Manager ( friend of mine). We have tried Europe, Uk, USA & Asia... there is nothing available.

You should only loose memory when the permanent 12v supply is interupted. You cant connect it to anything that is switched

If the control unit has a positive permanent 12v feed and a switched feed from the ignition I would say that by isolating the battery you will loose all memory in the control unit, the same as what can happen with sterios. Did you install the system ?
