I'd definitely be interested in E39 540 headers if they were under NZ$1000, otherwise I'll probably look at the Dinan manifold.

All from Schmiedmann - bought one from BM Workshop about a 18 months ago for my old car and it was almost 3 times the price. The rear windscreen's proving to be an absolute b*tch to get in along the top right. Had no problem when I replaced the one on my 528, this one's proving very problematic. Can't see any obstructions but the window sealant looks pretty thick in the corner it won't fit properly. If anyone's got a foolproof technique let me know! EDIT: Fixed. Looks like the rear windscreen has been replaced at some point and the old rubber was trim was glued' in with too much sealant. Had to cut some of the extra sealant out, repaint the scratches I made cutting out out (it's not easy stuff to remove!!) so it doesn't rust under the trim, and then the trim fitted perfectly. Also discovered BM Workshop serviced the car for many years and the previous owner was happy to share old service info. Looks like it was exceptionally well looked after up to about 4 years ago when it changed hands. Good to see that some of the big jobs (cooling system, suspension) were done at around 120,000kms - it's done almost 60,000 since then but they should be good for another 40-60K.

Got some new stuff from Schmiedmann today... Part 1 of a truckload of gaskets - though these are the biggest bits. 2 x front door gaskets (the bits that attached to the body not the door) Front and rear window gaskets Fancy gloss black FL kidneys (tried some cheap aftermarket ones on my last car and they were sh*t so decided to get some decent ones)

Doing it all at the same time.

It's all Russian to me, mate! Going to overhaul Vanos and replace all the valve box gaskets, etc. The Beisan Systems DIY is incredibly detailed but it might as well be in Russian as well because I seriously doubt I could manage it without f*cking something up badly!

Cheers Tony. If it's dry this weekend I'm going to re-appraise and decide whether to take it on myself or spend a couple of hundred to get it done properly.

Jesus! Where do I get a set for US$250????
-
+1 - wish I had the courage (and knowhow) to do this kind of work on mine!

AU$2K for 540i headers! Think I'll put that on my 'nice to have but not in a hurry list'.James - if headers for yours are only $375 then go for it!!!! I was imagining $2K+ like the headers for the 540i.

Welcome. Is that a genuine ACS E36? Pics please!
-
Fair enough - I like to learn! How much for a set of headers to replace stock on M62tub44 in an E39 540i?!?
-
I paid $200 for 8 BKR6EQUPs which I thought was a great price locally, normally retail for around $30 each
-
Is it that noticeable on short drives? Custom headers aren't that cheap, right?
-
TBH I don't really know - I never got to use them as I had to replace my plugs before these arrived and could only get BKR6EQUPs at short notice locally.Darren (M5V8) has recently put them in his E39 M5 and reported they are excellent.
-
Sorry must have misunderstood but assumed you wanted custom headers for performance gains. What are you hoping to achieve with new headers? Stock BMWs are pretty much as good as it gets for everyday use.
-
I hear you. I think I know (roughly) what I'm doing but am certainly going to use a light touch if I do try it out myself... Failing that I'll save up a few $$$s and get someone to do it properly. TBH I think the touch ups are harder - got to make sure you don't pile up too much paint and then when wet sanding it's pretty difficult to not sand around the area too much, especially if there is a bit too much paint! Still - it's a work in progress. Luckily BMW paint is pretty thick so there's a fair bit of paint to work with!!

Best plugs money can buy. Check compatibility on http://www.ngk.com Bought them for my E39 540i but the old ones died before these turned up so I had to buy some here. Now need to make back some of the cash I was extorted for the ones I got locally! 2 packs of 4 plugs (8 in total), $80/pack to BS members. Will go on TM in the next couple of days if no takers.

Thanks Tom... Might give it a whirl as a pro job's gonna be a bit pricey. Since I've got no garage it'll be weather dependent. I'll text you when it stops raining!
-
Get an E39 540i. The difference is astonishing.
-
Yep, got all that. Just want the extra info Tom found out, in particular the transmission model. Not sure how to find this out?
-
Great buy! Looks in amazing condition and the interior is immaculate. Well done!
