  1. This was my Fathers car, he has recently passed away.

2 of the 7 owners have been private, the rest are through dealerships. My Father owned it for 10.5 years, and in that time, it has been always serviced, and always garaged. I have all receipts available for servicing done.

Built in December 1990, it was blessed with the 24v version straight six. Although a bit sluggish, it is a nice smooth car to drive. The overall condition of the car is excellent and original for its age.

  2. probably a waste of time putting a pod filter in, it will only end up sucking in hot air. If done properly i.e ram air intake style, u would probably only see minimal difference.... its the intake manifold which is the bottleneck in there engines from what i gather. Still each to their own :-)

  3. Hi,

I have an e39 528ise nz-new fsh, blah blah blah

When driving for lengthy periods on the motorway, or on very cold days, the coolant temp goes down, like almost back in to the blue zone. It also takes longer than normal for the car to reach normal operating temp (coolant temp half way) the car never overheats (according to the guage anyway) thus leads me to believe the thermostat is stuck open.

My questions are, will this affect the engines condition in anyway? should i get the thermostat replaced? im thinking because the m52 is an alloy block and head lump, the frequent change in coolant temp will have an effect on the engine, and the engine oil ? like warping or cracking ?? afaik its only when the engine is overheated that you start warping cracking things ??

thanks for any constructive/helpful feedback :-D

  4. Won this in Wii boxing competition at work, The Wii is brand new in the box, only used once to test all components work properly.

Looking for around $350 which is pretty good considering they are $500 in the shops. Comes with Wii sports game.

  5. it starts whining (when cold) when i start moving. mite pay to replace diff fluid

tried throtlling round corners at all soughts of speeds.

but the only problems im having is when im going slow in first gear.

if im going like 20 in first and plan the foot no problems

but it seems anywhere below that speed too much power will put it into a bunny hop ?

    so no gears gone?

just the diff on the way out ?

what sought of price am i looking at ?

does any one have a solution ?

maybe i should invest in my lsd now ?

    cheers guys

typing on a keyboard is not gpoing to fix ur problem dude, we can only suggest and comment what the problem mite be providing you give us all the relevant info (which u have done so)

if your diff is poked, then it should whine/rattle at all speeds, if its only in 1st, then it sounds like something in the gearbox is playing up...maybe a bearing is on its way out? what about in 2nd gear when its cold, same problems?

  6. coast the car in neutral at around 50 - 70 kmh if u hear a whine coming from the back, it would indicate your diff pinion/crown gears are worn. Have you tryed replacing the fluid? does it make whining/rattling noises when turning sharp corners ?

I'd say older cars tend to be a bit noisier when they are cold. In saying that tho, are you sure the whinning is not coming from the passenger's seats when your not driving alone ? could be two problems here lol

  7. Is there a thread or does anyone know what I missing here ...

I cant seem to adjust the volume on this car, not sure if it is focked or if I have a pressed something.

When I got the car the stereo worked fine, now it is set to the same volume and cant be changed. The knob only works now to turn on and off (push in and out)

This is the model without the TV/SATNAV, just the basic BC/stereo with tape player above.

    Anyone have a suggestion?

I have a similar problem where the volume knob has a mind of its own. If i am cruising along with music playing, i find myself talking louder and louder to a an occupant as movement/bumps increase the volume. Hard braking causes the volume to go down...

when you turn the volume knob, can you feel it 'clicking' as its moved? mine doesnt, and i think this is why my volume does what it likes... if it doesnt click, then it may be badly worn, or the contact points need a thorough cleaning...

I recommend having a chat to jochen on these forums, he is a genius!

  8. i had the 8V GTI version, awesome cars. If the you hear clanking noises coming from the front, and think it might be the cv's, check the brake pad clips first lol

Hope your doznt have a sunroof, mine did and the turned itself into a mobile fish tank on rainy days.

  9. 1990 mitsi galant - 2.0 SOHC heap of sh*t first car, did 70,000 brutal k's in it and it didnt miss a beat tho

1988 mitsi eterna zr-4 - first turbo performance car..wrote it off 3 months later thinking i was colin mcrae lol

1985 VW GOLF GT - Awesome car, pitty about the leaking sunroof.

1988 mitsi eterna zr-4 - 2nd turbo performance car, a fast endless money pit

1980 Hilman Avenger - paddock basher, see my thread on it :-)

1997 E39 528ise - awesome car... pretty much everything you'd want in a car... perhaps it neebds a bit more grunt.

  10. Spargo is right your mechanic is a tosser please post his details so we all know NOT to go there.

That should be an M54 twin vanos engine you should be able to pick up a complete one locally there was a 2000 (528) wreck for sale on trade me with a good engine a few weeks back.

Alternatively be rash put an M3 engine in it, thats my plan when the wife blows up our shopping trolley

the good old m52 engine, complete with an alloy block. Alloy doesnt like being overheated, so it tends to warp, and crack. Seems over heating issues are the archillies heel for 6cyl e39's... u overheat them, and u pretty much f**k the short engine.

  11. Hey guys, this is my first post.

I love this car, but im planning on selling it at around October this year because I need the money to be a exchange student and go to sweden.

So if anyone can help me it would be great.... cheers!

is it nz-new, and does it have a full service history? if its in good nick, and only has a few very minor problems upon a professional inspection, i'd say u shud get around 5 - 6k

  12. 3 owners, nz-new, fsh, done 200kms, but only failed a bmw inspection on leaky ps hoses, rear speakers not working (they are now thanks to jochen :-) ) worn wiper blades, and a faulty LH head light lamp adjuster. Paid 10k

  13. Martin came to my house tonight and together we fixed his stereo problems in his car.

Diagnosed the problem to a speaker wire short to ground on the rear left speaker.

We were amazed that we actually found the problem so quickly - the speaker wire had been chaffing against a bolt just under and in front of the LH rear speaker. Cut and soldered the wires back together, and insulated with heat-shrink, and now the stereo works on all speakers, front and rear.

This shows what a robust design the Business RDS stereo is - even with a speaker wire short which has probably been there for a long long time - maybe even years - the stereo didn't get damaged. The power amp chips shut down into protected mode, and when the short went away, everything worked again normally.

    Cheers, Jochen

Many thanks to Jochen for resolving my speaker problem :-)

  14. Lol.. Seems like we have a fetish for swearwords on our hands..

we did have a hell of a time getting it out to the paddock... the first attempt in broke down 3 times on the motorway due to the distributor rotor being faulty, the second attempt the belt driving the alternator, and the water pump decided to let go as i was cruizing on the m'way, i ended up having to change the belt over on the side of the m'way lol....so we thought we'd paint all the swear words said whilst getting it out to the paddock haha.

The Avenger would not be alive to this day if it wasnt for our custom front mount..........electric fan we scored of a honda poolude

  15. A mate and I purchased a 1980 Hillman Avenger for 4/5ths of f**k all and decided it was going to be perfect for the paddock our friend has.

This is what she looked like when we first got her...its almost a sin to see what it looks like now, but so far we've done over 200 laps of the paddock, and i'm happy to say, the avenger lives on :-D

The weekend that just past was the best ever for two reasons. 1. The avenger finally looks like a paddock basher, and 2. after we thought it was well and truly dead, it still lives! :D

We began the day, by checking the oil, adding fuel...and giving it an artistic dribble of rattle can paint....

After 2 laps of the paddock, both engine mounts were rooted, and the engine had shuffled to the side, just enuff so that the altenator pulley rubbed on the lower radiator hose, ripping a hole in it. A bit of belt strapping from an old delivery truck wrapped around the entire engine, some radiator hose repair, fresh water and we were away again.

To improve our subjects aero dynamics, and its appearance, we felt a rather large sledge hammer was needed....

Towards the end of the day, it was scorching hot, we were covered in dust, and i became a little too over confident behind the wheel...heres a vid of me almost taking out a tree

All in all it was a great day, and i look forward to next time :)

  16. Hi all, i have a nz-new 97' e39 528ise with the business RDS system. The rear-shelf speakers are not working, and the E39's seem to be put togeather like a brick sh*t-house, making it a c**t to work on.

I've been doing a bit of research and have seen that some E39 bmw audio systems come with a seperate amplifier for the speakers, would my one have a seperate amp? if so, where would it be loacted? (checked in the trunk, behind the side panels, and couldnt see anything resembling an amplifier)

Does anyone know what things i should be checking to try and suss out why the back speakers are not working? So far i've inspected the rear speakers, which seem in good shape, and played with the fader/balance, but to no avail.
