Not sure if you are referring to the cybertruck or the i5 there, but in terms of the i5 then I would argue that it depends on your definition of enjoyment.
If throwing it through the twisties with the engine roaring is your idea of enjoyable, then yeah the i5 is not for you.

However, if driving from Auckland to Napier in serene comfort at not inconsiderable speed  (once over the ooh how many kms range can I get moment) with wife, kids and a bootfull of week-end stuff and getting out at the other end four and a half hours later not feeling it is more up your street then I would suggest you give it a try.

It also performed pretty well driving over the lumps and bumps of coarse chip in South Island as well.

What's the NZ retail on that Jon ^_^

Haven't watched the video yet, but from what I have seen of the new 5 so far.  What is the point of it?  It's time for some real innovation in cars.  Cybertruck is a step in the right direction.

I would say the Cyber Truck is exactly the same thing with a kids drawing body slapped on top. Crammed full of gimmicks. You're not going to get driving enjoyment from one. But its perfect for the attention seeker.

  3. Regen braking that doesn't activate brake lights.  Absolute joke.  I watched a newish Hyundai slow from 80kph to 50kph quite quickly without any brake lights being activated.  So quick I thought their lights were not working.

I think you can take the whole emissions thing seriously when you no longer see ex Japan refrigerated trucks being driven around belching black smoke. I assume they will do this at some stage which will be interesting for all the egr/dpf delete folk.

Government needs to start going after companies that have been doing this.  Good money to be made.
Company was fined $1m USD last year for it.

"Interesting" RUC calculation for hybrids at $57/1000km, which assumes they all run at 3l/100km (referenced from the source, not performed my own calculations).

A missed opportunity to change the flat rate of $76/1000km for everything under 3.5T. Quite a large difference between your 118d and M50d 😂

They absolutely have the data and ability to do this too.
It is already half assed in place for heavy vehicles.  Worked with all this data when I worked for Eroad.

@Driftit how much should I expect to pay for "parking sensors"?

That R8 setup with Highway Radar seems damn good, but I saw a few people on RDForums saying laser was getting more common.

Parking sensors are hard to get here now.  The ones on my Merc have been on there at least 10 years now.
They are active ones meaning they are always on.  The passive or reactive ones last I read were no good.
Have a go through youtube and watch some tests.  Many barely work especially if placed poorly.  Mine are almost on my number plates where most guns will target.

Took the 130 for a very over due drive out to kaipara today, got pulled over on the way home... 100% police profiling 😕 Was in middle of queue of traffic doing exactly 100kmh, light truck in front of and behind me,... apparently the goat track out there is 80 (going to google maps street view it, because faffed if I saw any signs..)... I need to do some research into radar detectors.

That is real sh*t.  I've seen it happen to a young dude in an Evo7/8/9 right in front of me.  Cop moved 3 normal looking cars to pull him over.  Ignoring the two utes ahead of him.  His car looked standard, but not like the other boring sh*t around him I guess.

Highway radar will link to my R8NZ over bluetooth, link to waze crowd source data and display police reports, link to air traffic and display your position on a map.

This sounds amazing.  I am so sick of tip toeing around the Wairarapa at the moment so would like to update the system.  My old stealth Bell system in the Merc is starting to play up.  Gives an error beep after about 30mins of it being on.  The laser  parking sensors seem still happy but i've only seen on cop with a radar gun in the last 3 months and I was in the wrong car.

There are so many cops trying to catch people 4kph over the speed limit on dead straight roads.  One flashed me at 82kph (GPS).  I was on cruise control on the roads between Greytown and Featherston.  Dead straight.  Nobody around me.  I made sure he could see me shaking my head like some grumpy old man.

Guess who bought Penrite HPR 5w40 very, very recently? :angry::angry:

Never buy it when it's not on special. Take the Briscoes approach. It will be on sale sometime soon.

I just keep buying it when it hits 50-60% off.

It might not come as any surprise, but the big kidney grills are liked by the yanks. BMW USA has had its biggest sales year ever, and the 4 Series and 7 series were the models that had the biggest sales increases. Looks like the big nostrils are here to stay.

There has been confusion when this has been brought up on reddit a number of times. Including by BMW salesman. Where are these cars. Nobody ever seems to see them. Unlike the last gens when released which were everywhere. Do they blend into the masses more easily?

  10. Oh I forgot to add that the Forum is hosted privately by James.  Who is another OG to the forum.
Most of mods came from just hanging around long enough.  Jon and myself from the early involvement in the BMW race series.  Ollie and Andrew both ran in the BMW series too.

You are not going to find useful car info via dumpster fires like TikTok.  So lets hope people bring their knowledge back to the forums where it can be stored.

  11. TBH there was nearly a complaint every time he posted something.  And he was doing it on purpose much of the time.

The founders Ollie and Andrew drop by every now and then.  Ollie has just listed his Bimmersport E30 Series car for sale on the forum.  Even comes with keys to the forum.

There are still many old members lurking around.  But Facebook did harm the forum space.  Only now are forums starting to make a come back as people are hunting for info on classic cars.  Facebook is a black hole for anything older than about 12 hours.  Searching is non existent and near on useless.  The only thing it is good for is meet ups.  Many of the younger kids (18-25) at work don't even have Facebook.  As that is for their parents.  Many of my friends and family are quitting it as current social media takes it's toll on their lives.

There is so much info on this forum and others that are similar.  I do still get angry at the great Photobucket purge.  So many lost important images.

  12. I remember reading that daft crap years ago in email form.  It's what they created.  Not what they inherited from their parents.
All that bad stuff like Teflon and plastic bags just appeared out of thin air.  It definitely wasn't a now old man that created them.

But also I drive a gas destroying supercharged V8 and do lots of burnouts.  I'm doing my part 😅

Wairarapa SH2 roadworks claimed my windscreen this morning. Not excited about the replacement process, especially at this time of year. Given the terrible reviews of S+S Glass (who are preferred repairer) wondering if I should call Continental Cars and see what they'd charge. Screen has rain sensor and high beam assist camera so hopefully I should get an OEM screen rather than some janky chinese crap

    IMG_8272.jpeg

Mines currently cracked in two spots from the same road.

Wairarapa Windscreens are my go to. Recently did my E55 with a genuine screen.

I haven't bothered fixing the 1 series yet. Roads are still stuffed.

  14. Stopped at the Pitstop Coffee place in Carterton yesterday morning.
Really well kept E46 M3 in black with the plate M33333.
I think it is the owner of the print shop there.  Also has a nice BMW R70ish cafe racer.

Nice to see one out and about rather than sitting in some ones garage where they are hoping it will go up in value by another $5k this year.

It’d be great to see an increased uptake. I got a voice alert today for a level crossing today which I was pretty impressed by. People still drive across these and get destroyed by trains, which really shouldn’t be happening in the grand year of 2023.

It's starting to build.  As more and more cars come with android auto and carplay built in it can be always active in the background.  The pothole warnings are the biggest thing for me.

  16. In the city Waze works well as Taxi drivers and truck drivers use it.

I think I'm one of two people in the Wairarapa that use it. I had to ask them to extend the expiration time for reports which they did. But I marked a camera van in Greytown yesterday evening.

Also you can just tell Google to mark things by voice. "Hey Google report Pothole" etc. Guess Siri would be the same "Sure I've ordered you some toilet paper".

The idea is that your detector will pick up the officer as he's pinging other cars. It'd be pretty unlucky to be the only car on the road for miles. I'm picking that officers would generally pick busier roads so that they can keep as many people "safe" as possible.

Radar jammer? I think you mean parking sensors 😉

On Saturday I drove the 80km/h road between Featherston and Greytown and decided I'd had enough. Absolute pisstake..

He got picked up on the back roads out the back of Carterton whilst the worst of the roadworks was taking place.  Not enough traffic for him to pick up other vehicle checks.  The cops were sitting out there looking for people trying to avoid the 15-20min delays being stuck behind a truck that decided to reset the road cones at peak times every bloody day.

My parking sensors have worked quite well for me over the years.  I do enjoy the confusion.  It's active so I just leave it on, 99% of the time I am actually just tootling along or towing.  Though many of the guns are good enough to find a spot to bypass it on the car these days.  Mine alarms if they target the number plate or grill and auto shuts off after 5 or so seconds.

I drive that road twice a day.  I have two huge chips in my 6 month old windscreen.  One of my shocks is now leaking.  I had to replace my two front tyres that had sidewall damage from an un-sign posted ridge in the road where two surfaces joined.  And they have actually stopped all work for xmas.  Two weeks early.  The off camber roundabouts caused a Wairarapa F1 Car (Logging Truck) to roll and lose its load last week.

8 years later and I'm gonna necro this thread because I bought a V1G1 today 😆

Kid at work just sold his Valentine after getting two tickets in quick succession. He wasn't aware of the instant on feature. Only chance against that is if you were not the one being targeted.

Also my radar jammer is not reliable anymore. One guess as to how I found that out 😢
