    Quick Questions

Got my done at a tyre, brake and suspension place. Had this discussion with Gus and I'm of the opinion that machining is a totally acceptable way to go. Expect to pay about half the cot of new rotors. Should only be done if the total rotor thickness after machining will be within spec. Always match new rotors/machined rotors with new pads. They should be able to do it in a couple of hours turnaround (its a pretty quick job).

    bmw help

You heard correct - pod filter with no heat sheild = performance loss not gain. Either build a properly designed cold air intake, or put a k&n panel filter in the stock air box (most people recommend this and it is the setup I have run in both e30's).
  3. Engines tend to find their own level too. I was talking to a technician for Yamaha who helped us run in our new 4 stroke outboards. Alot of people will check the oil and find it is just below the full mark on the dipstick. So they top it up - a week or so later they check again and same thing so they maon to the dealer that their new motor is using oil. In fact, the motor is "full" just below the dipstick and they keep overfilling the motor and the motor keeps "losing" the little bit extra. (I don't fully understand where). If left at this just below full mark, and checked, the level never drops any more than this. My guess is car engines are the same.
  4. I bought a Jonnesway 3 tonne trolley jack from BNT for less than $300 and a set of 3 tonne axle stands took the total to $300. Great construction on the jack - very very well built and 400-500 lift height. Still can't get it under the car though - have to lift on the sill, block up and then up jack under diff/rear subfram etc. Gus, that alloy jack in Andrews garage (powerbuilt I think). I didn't like it at all - have to reach down to the release valve and then "three lifts to chassis" thing that means it pumps up quickly means that the front of the jack lifts off the ground as you have to put so much more force on the lever. It was very low though. Andy - If you want some good wooden blocks I can give you some - have stacks of 4x4 for propping up boats.
  5. Read the sticky regarding car audio! All your questions will be answered.

    TXTing

Txting has its place - I hate writing txts as it takes so much effort, but I like the ability to fire thoughts at people whenever I feel like it even if they aren't there. They get back to me later. I also do this by sending voicemail messages which the same price as txting. Calls are less cumbersome, but I find that in noisy environments or where both parties are busy, txting allows a more convenient time frame for the conversation. It also allows for last minute thoughts that would normally be lost as the receiver has been just put down as by txt the conversation never really stops. I just sold my car with no communication whatsoever other than txt and then a final ph call last night to set up a when and where to do the transaction. Even the pre-purchase inspection was arranged by txt. The purchaser was able to txt questions as she thought of them instead of trying to sort out a whole list at once. Negotiation is harder, but not impossible. txt flirting is the win too. Meet, impress someone and then get their number. Want to invite them over for more than just coffee? easy to set up by txt - much harder on the phone or face to face. By txt you are less liekly to say something wrong and if you do, you explain it away by saying they misunderstood your txt! easy? And as far as communication without verbal and non-verbal clues? What the hell do you think this forum and the entire worlds' written history is??? As long as you are careful its amazing what meaning can be expressed by text alone. All that said, a ph call is often easier and much more enjoyable, but for those of you avoiding technology such as txt/sms then your missing out on a great tool.

    wheel alignment

Go to one of those tyre shops that aren't chains but are still clean and tidy (ie take pride in their work). I take mine to a place up here that does all the usual tyres suspension brakes etc and also valets and detailing. The workshop is immaculate and the staff dressed tidily. They charge around $60 for an alignment and you get the printout afterwards so you can see what your car is doing. Bloody e30's I've never seen one without toe-in on the rear and its not adjustable.
  9. Cars don't "use" coolant - they may leak it tho. The difference between the bottom of the dipstick and the top for most cars is about a litre of oil so put it in in 1 litre amounts until it shows up on the dipstick. Keep track of how much you put in. Your engine cannot magically "eat" oil when it is not running so if you have put in 4 or 5 litres and it is still not showing on the dipstick it must be going soimewhere. (under the car?) If it is using oil then you should find out where - if it is a leak then you need to replace the seal or gasket where the leak is. If it is burning it it may be the rings or valve guides in which case if it isn't too much and your car is running fine you could chose to leave it and just top up oil now and again although eventually you may be up for a rebuild or at the very least new rings/valve guides. My car is like this - uses a tiny bit of oil and small amount of blue smoke. Runs fine tho and mine being a relatively inexpensive m20 motor I'm just going to drive it until it gets worse which could be 5kms or 50,000kms. Coolant could be leaking from hoses, radiator, waterpump gasket or through your head gasket into your cylinders, you'll notice white smoke, milkiness in your oil and chances are it'll run like a sack of sh*t. Haed gasket is a pain to replace but not the end of the world. Way less scary than people make out, but still could cost a pretty penny to do.

    1) there's your problem - its too small! 2) doh - I'm getting a wheel align today after a similar experience a week or so ago 3) henna space craft.
  11. That's the information I have but I havn't done it myself.
  12. Read the first post - he wants $650 for the car. You can use the suspension parts and do a 5 stud conversion. The engine is an m20 (same as e30 6-cyl) so you can bolt the gearbox on and use alot of the other parts for a manual conversion. It is the eta engine which is 2.7L - you use a combination of your 320/325 motor and this one and you end up with a 2.7L motor similar to the ones in the SA 325iS like what Sam has. All for $650 plus labour and consumables - its a good deal.
  13. Wish I had some extra cash laying about - $650 and you get for your 6-cyl e30: Parts for a 2.7 rebuild Manual conversion 5-stud conversion badass.

    Jetski

I only know him by his christian name - "Matteo" (sp) A quick google brings up Mr. M de Nora Robinia Investments Ltd - holdings - 525 hectares Bay of Islands (in the correct bay where his house is). The companies register brings up Matteo De Nora, Monaco. Overseas Investment amendment Act decisions says "of Canada". ASome other page has a comment from some italian woman "model" - 'millionarre I conquer it - Matteo De Nora' I'd say that's our man. Internet stalking FTW! Doesn't make Forbes so maybe just multi multi mill. I wouldn't retell the story except it's "common knowledge" in the bay so I'm not telling tales out of school as it were. Aparently he's a reallly nice guy - but likes to get his way. I'd want to get my way if I had that kind of money too! We have a handful of billionaires/multi multi millionaires in the bay with ridiculous $10 million plus holiday homes. Kiri Te Kanawa (sp) although not a billionairre has a couple of million$ plus homes up here and resides here alot of the time, a couple of american celebs have homes here too. Was working at a site last week and the client arrived by helicopter. Had a 10 minute meeting with me and another professional and flew back whence he came. So O/T - sorry Steve.
  15. I know what you are saying Jazz and i fully agree. Yet for some reason, I still admire the few rota'd e30's around - they look cool, they go like stink, most have been done properly. It's lots of work and money and something a bit different and you gotta admire that. I'd do it - mainly just so I could say I did and because of the novelty factor. And I'm in my 20's (half way in), use the Queen's English (generally) am university educated, am a qualified professional and a commitee member in a professional trade organisation. Rotas still have "cool factor"... erm... bro. Chur.

    Jetski

Jetskis are fun but I'm almost ready to start taking pot shots at clueless idiots (usually with more money than sense) blasting around on them causing accidents and running over swimmers. The government wants to bring in boat registration and skipper licensing - mainly because of the actions of careless jetskiers. And once that happens there goes my last bastion of freedom, and another chunk of my income into another tax. As if owning a boat wasn't expensive enough (Think $7-8k a year already without licensing fees on top). That aside, if you want to be a responsible skier, then I'd be looking very carefully at the motor and jet unit as how often do you see these things running at anything less than full revs? I do know of a couple of secondhand ones in good nick - an overseas billionaire who is a customer of my Dad's and owns property here in the bay bought two brand new ones. he got his caretaker to unwrap and fuel them for his use when he came to nz. He didn't come that year. The enxt year he got the caretaker to take the now secondhand skis back to the dealer and trade them on new ones cos he was coming over and didn't want to be seen on l;ast years model skis. The dealer did a good trade but obviously made on the deal as technically the skis were no longer new and now a year old. This time the caretaker didn't act on instruction and left the skis in their crates. The guy didn't come over again and the skis were duly sent back for a full refund. bought new ones again last year which did get used for a few hours. Some people live in a different world - his house is three years old, cost 20 million just to build the house. The caretakers "cottage" cost 1 million to build and the guy has lived in it for maybe 6 weeks in 3 years.

    E30 M3 Replica

Cool - wheel centre daps FTL and the kit doesn't appear to fit that well on the boot, but if it was in mint condition and around the 10k mark I'd be in like flynn.

    E30 320i

Forward rake is when it's slightly lower in the front than the back (most e30's are the other way around). I think it looks good. 75mm in the front?! wouldn't that make the control arm bush about about 75-95mm off the ground? Certed? Not a fan of your rear lights. A rear skirt - mtech I ?? would make a huge difference to how your car looks.
  19. Would bolt up to an e30 6-cyl. I'd be keen if I hadn't just bough tone already.

    Quick Questions

If the lights work but not the bulbs in the cluster get them fixed as if you have a warning light on your instrument panel for fogs it must work or it'll fail a wof. Sounds ridicul;ous I know but check the wof manual if you dont believe me.
