did you check your head ?
-
Sorry guys for bothering you, but before this thread is extinct, just wanted to know if there may be any benefit adding a 325i intake manifold to the 325i tb for the 320i.? I just have not heard of anyone doing it so dont know if it is worthwhile or not.
-
Why not?
-
I am soon going to change the throttle body for my 320i, seeing as I will need to grind some of the some of the intake throttle body port away, Would it be better to just get a 325i intake? And maybe do it in black wrinkle?
-
Yeah climbing hills is one of my main considerations, I live high up in the mountains. The 320i you can fang it up hill and its pretty good, but you see the fuel gauge drop, if you approach a hill at 60kmh or less you are stuffed. I think cars must be cheaper in NZ, but I could still import an 88 model from Japan with less than 120k, maybe M-tech.
-
This is all pretty interesting, according to an index I photo copied out of an 89 wheels mag, the 535i produced 136 kW and the 735i 155 KW, is that right?
-
I imported my E30 from Japan a couple of years back, worked out really well for me, But now here in Australia they have changed the laws so that we cant import viehcles built after 88!! Unless it is a few select Japanese models, so no cheap tidy Bimmers. What is the situation there in NZ ? I would avoid buying a local car if I had the option of importing one from Japan again..
-
I have heard a lot about the reliability of the M30 motor, I have seen a lot of 535i s and 735i s with close to 200 K on the clock that look to be well looked after, would it still be worth paying up to 8- 10k for a tidy one with that kind of mileage?
-
I have been thinking about the viability of either an E32 735i or E34 535i as a second car, not as a daily driver but as a comfortable cruiser for the weekend and longer journeys . 10,000 Km per year or so. But the way petrol prices are going I am beguining to have second thoughts, I am curious to hear what peoples experiences are with these cars are, running costs and maintenence. If doing a lot of general maintenance oneself is the E32 much more expensive to keep in order than a E34 535i?

The engine mounts are in good nick,Maybe the motor is sitting the same as ever, I had to jack up the engine the other day to replace the oil sump, its likely that things got pulled around a bit. I checked the bottom of the shroud and its sitting well in the slots. The shroud has a bit of a warp in it, and this combination of things had created the problem. She s runnen sweet as now. So thanks, glad I did not have to buy a new fan clutch theyre expensive!
-
Anyway, I came to the conclusion that the motor is sitting a fraction lower on its mounts, that and the fan shroud sitting a fraction high. So I pushed the shroud down a fraction tilted the radiator about 3-5 degree and thats fixed the problem, I am glad it did not involve anything more complex or parts. Man I did not realize that removing the oil sump was gonna be such a pain.

Its a facelift E30, its the fan attatched to the camshaft What I have found is that it is not clearing the plastic cover / shroud that is situated arounf the fan, so the fan gets stuck and the spindle/bolt its mounted on turns with the engine runnining but the fan stays still.. Maybe the 32mm nut is loose? I am hoping that I wont have to remove the radiator.

Can anyone tell me where on the later model 320i are the sensors and wiring for the engine cooling fan located? My fan has ceased working at least on idle. Also if anyone has had this problem what was the solution? Thanks.
-
I am waiting for one to arrive bought off e-bay, looking forward to making the change, omeone said with a re-chip it made thier 320i respond very similar to a regular 325i.
-
I will stick with the 4,27, when you say not very good at all Carl, do you mean worse off than the auto? Hopefully with the 325i throttle body and manual conversion it will overcome some of that low end sluggishness. Still its fun to drive.
-
Thanks guys for the info, will get a Sachs clutch kit and a short shift in advance, look at getting it together by December, So Getrag 260 or 265.... Will keep the 4.27 until I can find/afford LSD. Would you reckon fuel economy better than Auto on highway and mountainous country? Lightened fly wheel would be good but$$$$$$ Wrecked car maybe if I find one?
-
Well there is a good article concerning this in the latest Total BMW. Again its the 320i, 325e, and perhaps the 323i that benefit. The 320i was restricted intentionally by the manufacturer, the 318i is probally ok as it is. Has anyone ported and polished a 320i head with any results to speak of? :puke:
-
I wanna do the manual conversion in the future sometime on my 88 320i, So I will be on the lookout for a gearbox. Which is the best one for the job, my diff is a 4.27 open. What is there to choose from ? Or do you just get a 5 speed Getrag from a late model 325i?
-
I got a Blaupunkt phoenix off E-bay, blends in nicely with the dash looks good, Mp3 is useful, cant complain about the sound quality and I listen to a lot of audiophile gear. I think it cost me about $70 US and about $30 shipping, cheap but damn good for the money.
-
That thread on the manual conversion is pretty inspiring definitely on my things to do list, maybe add some headers at the same time. What is a fair price for a 325i throttle body?
-
While on the subject, is there any difference between the throttle bodies for an auto and manual 325i? And is there any benefit bolting a 325i TB an a 320i? What is a reasonable price to pay for a manual gearbox?

Charcoal/ silver , sounds similar to black chrome, Yeah I was kind of thinking a dark gunmetal sort of colour rather than straight out black. Tryed out a centre cap today, no go they dont quite match up pattern wise. So I think I will forget about centre caps, they look kind of cheap and cruddy anyway. maybe I'll use lids from Nescafe jars or something. I think the wheels I have may not have been made specifiically for BMW maybe . But I may never know.
-
Thanks mate, there are always ways of improvising, so i wil see how it goes. :thumb:

Well, these wheels did not come with my car, you dont want to know what wheels did come with the car! I got em off e-bay I wanted a spare set of wheels, and used 15inch basket weaves seemed like a good bet. I only got 3 so I will have to find anothe,r but there is no hurry it is not as if I'm driving around on 3 wheels. They were not listed as BBS but the seller said they came off an E-30, so i just assumed they were. I paid $210 for the lot which I thought was ok considering the tyres have plenty of tread on them. Actually tommorrow I may drop into one of the BMW dealers here in Sydney I have to pick up some vacum hose. They have a centre cap. Furthermore eventually I was thinking of getting them re-finnished in black, cecotto like, waddya reckon?

What I was getting at was, that possibly over time a failed 02 sensor may cause the motor to run too rich contributing to the cat overheating and eventual failure. The o2 sensor is on the downpipe just under the manifold but both the cat and 02 sensor are part of the emissions system.. I will check out the cat overheat sensor some time that will be interesting. sorry it sounds like I am talking about an o2 sensor on the cat,in my previous post what I meant was, the heat sensor if there is one.
