  1. I knew of this red high line 15 plus years ago when I owned Rowan's Old Burgundy high line.

The highlines were designed as a method of 'sprucing up' the E24 and enhancing sales in 88/89 before the arrival of the E31. Anecdotally there were 450 Highlines made for the UK market (NZ has around 6 plus imports). However, there were also a limited number made which were called Motorsports. They came in 3 Colours- misano red, nogaro silver, and Macau blue. They were dechromed and had the /// M logo inserts on the seats.

This example however, is not one as it is in Zinnober red.

The same thing applied to the M635csi they did a special run of 20 Motorsport M635csi's the UK - comprising of the same 3 special colours.

They are some of the most sought after right hand drive M635csi's in the UK.

I recall seeing either this car or a red highline in the late 90's in Napier. It was owned by an old bloke who's Son was adamant that it was an auto M635. It wasn't though, it didn't have the engine. The car stood out because it had a set of Momo R1's on it.

  2. I haven't seen an E30 M3 up for sale on TM for ages. What do you think they are worth in the NZ market?

I was suprised to hear that a 1987 year in grey done 254,000kms with a R (repair) Grade just sold in Japan for 3,345,000 yen, which equals $44,000NZD. Then add shipping, GST and compliance.

Does anyone know what of any E30 M3;s that have changed hand in NZ over the last 12 months?

  3. A bloody sight more than they sell for now! In my eyes an unmolested CSL is the only true successor to the E30 EVO - all the good stuff with none of the junk you don't really need.

The M3 CSL is a great drive and a very capable track day car, but it doesn't get off the ground heritage wise compared to the E30 M3. The E30 M3 was homologated to go racing. Its the most successful touring car of all time. The M3 CSL has no racing heritage as such.

On another note, people seem to clap on about black CSL's and how rare they are. Silver Grey looks way better and shows the lines of the car so much better. Is the black rarer because it was less popular than Silver Grey?

  4. I read somewhere when it was for sale before deregistration that it was one of a few bought in to commemorate something or other. They were various special colours and this was part of that group.

    Edit, found something:

    "HELLBM 05 Feb 2009

One of 16 J Clayton brought in from SA. Fully M Speced in 4 different colours named after race tracks ie. Macau, Avus,Dakkar etc.."

Claytons may have sold 16 318IS MS's, but there were at least 50 of them sold new in NZ (built in South Africa).

Colours include:, Cosmos Black, Montreal Blue, Techno Violet, Dakar Yellow, Avus Blue, Fiji Green, Alpine White, Hell Red, Boston Green and Arctic Silver.

  5. It actually had a sister car, WR8885 would you believe, same colour and spec. Shelly BMW sold them both the same day back in late December '97 by the look of it. I know the other one is still around Wellington.

WR8885 is a different car. It's auto, Boston Green, built in Germany ( MS IS's are built in SA).

BMW NZ do lots have pre reg cars hence a lot of number plates being in numerical order.

  7. ahhh! I saw that. looks like it was a tourist delivery jobby. pulled pretty good money for 170kms, leather, reasonably tidy, but just a 2.2l. interesting where they ticked the option sheet for some nice fruit; the seats, manual gearbox, sunroof, PDC, unusual wheels, but no Xenons!

It would have been cool on the 18 inch Style 135's that it left the factory with, though it is a bit of a strange colour. The Bluetooth is pretty cool. And the 2 factory 12V plugs in the rare.
