How did you get the M3 so fast Ray? Did the owners not have insurance? I would have thought the insurance process would have taken a few weeks?

I replaced the air filter in my girlfriends E36 318IS Motorsport (M44 engine) yesterday. I was surprised to see the inside of the airbox lined with foam. I was a little shocked to see that the foam was breaking down as soon as it was touched. Not something you want to get sucked into your engine.
Is this a well know fault? Is this foam in a lot of BMW air boxs?

If its Nz new will be one of the 14 bougbht in by bmw nz. To my knowledge 4 were yellow. However i stand to be corrected .
14 3.2 Sedans, yes. Only one NZ new Dakar Yellow one though. There is a SA import in Dakar that lives in Napier.

There is NO Japanese spec, only Euro and US. Let's not go through this again...
Dog-leg box is more sought after by collectors as it is the more "sporty" option, plus the US spec cars have fugly side markers and other bits to meet US dumb-ass laws that the Euros don't.
Model code for this car is AK05 = M3 (Eur) so should have the dog-leg box. Was sold new in Japan.
FFS! You didnt "win" last time . . . .
Japanese new E30 M3's came with the same gearbox as the US spec M3's. Fact.
-
I believe that they came with H pattern standard and a few had the 'dogleg' gearbox that everyone seems to want
Incorrect.
US and Japanese spec had standard H pattern, rest of the world the "real" dogleg box.

Hey Tom, did you ever finish this project?

My Father owned this car in the early to mid 2000's, its a real M3. While Dad owned it he had the whole car repainted.

Thats been for sale off and on for around 3 years.

Back in 2008 in the Drivers Republic days Chris Harris had a facelift E39 M5, it had rust on the outside of the boot. That car would have been lucky if it was 7 years old at that point.
I love the UK rust debate. I know of 6 month old UK imports than have been pinged for rust. What a Pom calls rust and what a NZer calls rust are to very different things.
Do you guys ever look at english DIY threads and ask yourself "whats with all the surface rust thats even on nuts and bolts?"

An interesting watch:

Have you seen the light and want to go back to an E39 M5?
-
Just an update on this, after taking the seat out, cleaning the conectors, and another scan and reset we cleared the airbag light.
-
Yep Avus Blue still looks good, even with its face smooshed in. Interesting to see they were both South African
All the limited edition NZ new E36 318is Motorsports were built in South Africa, to the same spec.

Jeff's car? A real CSL.

That 4 block sitting unused is bound to be electric seats or seat heating which you won't have. I'd keep looking around at that wiring thoroughly. Trace it all to the ends and check/clean the connections. I'd be peeling back that accordion cover for the seatbelt latch itself and looking into that. That would seem a likely wear point for chaffed wires and disconnections.
Looks like a great time to be hoovering up all that dog hair, orange peels and old Macca's fries anyway..
Bloody GF's car, its cat fur . . . It loves going in the car.

I thought maybe the car wasnt insured or the woman did something to void insurance ie being drunk or something?
