Just as an FYI, I had tyre rub on my previous project, and it was due to the inner tie rod having been replaced and the OE lock washers weren't used:

..but seriously, a little thirstier then i'd like it to be - my wife's work is less than 5km from home, so it wasn't the greatest. About 13L/100km daily usage, goes down to 10L/100km on open road with my driving - and it handles like a really heavy sports car. I love it.

2006 BMW X3 2.5 4WD

Very comfortable car for the family, unfortunately we're having to sell due to moving overseas. 

- 2.5 litre M54B25 engine

Cons:
It was a faithful family car, therefore it has some scars: front bumper has some clearcoat flake, there is a gouge on the right hand side of the front bumper from a 'kiss' during a parking debacle. Otherwise it's the usual 15-year-old car standard: a couple unavoidable supermarket dings on the doors and light scratches on the paint which will probably come out with a cut and polish.

Advertised price is $6000 but taking offers - needs this gone by Saturday evening, 29th of May.

Metal gear for transfer case motor. Purchased to replace the worn plastic gear in my X3, however having flipped the plastic gear "temporarily" it resolved the issues and I haven't had a chance to pull it out again to replace with the metal gear.

If you're planning on keeping your car long-term, then this is a good replacement.

Well.. Trickle charge didn't achieve much, so I chucked in a new battery and no issues since.

I spotted this on facebook, and holy crap i can't stop looking at it 

@jon dee sent my wife to get a Wof for the x3 and asked them to test the battery - they show that the battery is still pretty good but they suggest charging it as well.

I'll get my hands on a proper trickle charger and give it a go.

Battery voltage drops substantially while cranking and if the battery is getting tired the cranking voltage may be dropping below that threshold. That's exactly what i'm thinking @jon dee - would be keen to get confirmation from someone who experienced this before, or like you said, knows more about BMW electronics then myself 😅 I hate replacing parts by guessing...

As it always seems to be, the moment I start thinking about selling a car it begins to play up.

My wife's 2006 X3 E83 2.5 (M54) battery has started to become weak, as witnesses by slow occasional slow cranking. Yesterday I drove the car to the refuse centre (not to dispose of it, just yet 😅) and when I jumped back in the car it was cranking fine but wouldn't start. I tried locking/unlocking the car, getting in and out, with no success. Even though cranking was still strong, I put a jumper pack on it and the car started straight away.

I trickle charged the battery overnight, and car start great this morning, so I drove it down the road to the bakery. 3 minutes later the car is cranking again, but no start. Connected the jump starter and it fired up straight away.

Is this a symptom of a weak battery? The little inspection window shows 'green', but I'm making the assumption the battery just doesn't have many CCAs left in it.

Any thoughts?

Hi,

Due to moving overseas I have to urgently part with my long-term project, much too soon for my liking.

It's a manual 1996 NZ New 318i Touring with 235,000kms. Car is drivable, but rego has been on hold for about 18 months - I was using it for about a year until I decided to put it on hold when I started commuting by motorbike - so it should probably be trailered away.

Pros:

• Fairly rare NZ New Touring
• Factory manual
• Headlining and A pillar trims were re-clothed professionally, using a darker material
• Purple tag steering rack
• Leather front seats
• Comes on staggered 17" style 68s with pretty new, high quality chinese tyres (probably done less than 1000kms on them) - 215/45/17 front, 235/45/17 rear
• New boot struts

Cons:

• Rough body - needs a little TLC - has a few small surface rust spots, couple small dents and needs a new paintjob as clearcoat is flaking
• Rear seats are a bit rough
• A few minor bits of interior trim missing 

Bonus - as this was a project, it will come with all the following:

• M54B30 - taken out of E46 with ~190kms which drove well and didn't smoke. All cylinders tested at 150psi. Some maintenance items have already been done:
  • New oil filter housing gasket (and new oil filter)
  • 2x new cooling pipes under intake manifold (plastic ones)
  • New rocker cover gasket
  • New oil sump gasket
• Comes with bits required to transplant the M54 into the E36:

Not sure about the hiss, but i found that lumpy idle on M44 engines is fairly common, and is caused by timing - you can adjust the sprockets ever so slightly when you take off the rocker cover and it resolves that issue. I'd have to find where I got information on this... but it definitely helped the Z3 i used to own, as the lumpy/shaky idle was driving me nuts.

I've got an e46 330i i'm scrapping. Engine is out, will need to remove the cross member for you, but you're welcome to it. Located in Te Atatu South.

Our 2006 X3 2.5 with the M54 engine uses around 13.5l/100km around town, and around 10l/100km on road trips outside of Auckland. I once managed to get 8l/100km on a trip to Ngatea, but there were hardly any hills on that drive, and I was using cruise control the whole time (yawn).

Around town it does about 400kms on a tank of petrol, so anywhere between $120-150 depending on price at the time - it is a pretty expensive run around, but thankfully my wife does hardly any mileage nowadays, and I daily on a motorbike.

Awesome work! I'm progressing much, MUCH slower on conversion but I will probably end up reaching out to you when the time comes.
