  1. >>Was the car overheating before these components were replaced?  Is it still overheating now?
Yes it was, and after the last top up it's stopped overheating.

Will take the bottom cover off and check the plug. Thanks for the info!

I just did that fan test (people say use a rolled up newspaper) because they're meant to be a failure point on the E39. I actually though when the clutch was fully engaged it would be unable to be stopped.

  2. Hi all,

I've got a really tidy 1997 E39 528i. It's just gone over 100,000km and it's worth looking after (in my opinion).

My issue is that I may have a head issue - I've replaced water pump, thermostat housing, radiator and fan clutch.

I got the local euro mechanic to do the radiator and fan clutch last week, and it was fine for a week. Then it overheated again on a short trip (not off the scale, but up to the red).

I tested the viscous fan and I could stop it fairly easily with a rubber stick, I'm not sure if that's a valid test but it didn't seem to be that hard to stop. Mechanic reckons it's all good.

The problem is I'm losing water slowly. I checked on the day it overheated and it was down near the bottom of the reservoir. I really can't see anywhere else the water would be going. I had an idea that it may have been an air lock type scenario (I know they are hard to bleed) but it doesn't make sense that it's losing water. It still seems to be dropping a bit, although it's really slow. Temp has been fine.

Mechanic came and did a Co2 test on it (one of the hand pump things with the blue liquid) and seemed pretty confident it wasn't the head. It has no other symptoms - running mint, no oil in water or water in oil, no smoke. I've had cars with bad head gaskets before and it was a mess!

Anything I'm missing or any suggestions? I can't think of anywhere else the water could be going. And is a head job even worth the cost? If it was a few grand I would consider it but I'm not sure what I would do if it's much more.

Have bought a 2001 540i with broken timing chain guides.  Found when  checking parts prices that I can buy parts for approx 50% of NZ suppliers prices from UK or USA.  Was a bit reluctant due to high freight cost.

Ended up buying from Aus,  info@runautoparts.com.au.  Worth checking out for parts, so far I am very happy with their service and prices.  Freight was only $15

Awesome advice, thanks! I've done the same for other vehicles I've owned, good to hear this works for BMW.

That's a really nice 540i, have you got it all running now?

Here's one that I think will do the trick, it's from 2004 it appears:

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2001-02-03-04-BMW-5-3-SERIES-CD-MP3-RADIO-AUX-PLAYER-OEM-65-12-6-943-433/273966678274?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649

    Then a Bluetooth thingy:

The Bluetooth will plug into the black square plug going into radio, then power red from a switched 12v source in the loom, and earth the same.  Google is your friend on pin numbers etc.

Also google, you tube the removal and install of head unit, it's done a particular way...

Wow nice info - do you know if I need a convertor for round to flat pins to fit one of these?

I'm a little but confused because like you say it looks like Sept 2004, but the SW version is only 42, and other threads say you need software version 43 or higher - I'm a bit wary about getting a unit shipped over that just doesn't work with my setup!

I would probably get one of the BMW genuine AUX adapters as I'd like to use my own bluetooth adapter kit, but other than that your suggestion looks perfect.

I'm having trouble finding any ones at good prices when I search BMW CD53 - what did you search to find this one?

I've just bought a later e39 Business CD radio (the thing that installs behind the "flap" up front, with aux input (off ebay $220) for my May 02 build 530.  Also a $30 Bluetooth adaptor off ebay which plugs straight into the rear of the business CD.  Controls on steering wheel don't work (except for volume) but the sound is great, the aux input even has adjustable level which is good.  An earlier e39 may need a round pin to flat pin adaptor cable to suit the more modern units flat pins.

I missed your comment here @hqstu when I replied to the last one - is there some kind of model number or search term I could use to find this particular model on Ebay? I'd love to go the full-factory method to get a nice clean sounding AUX with the factory stereo.

  6. Thanks @BozzaFC, @adro and @hunter, I'll wait to hear from the guys at GROM and order what they recommend. I'm actually considering just going for AUX only, if one of them is compatible. I would prefer not to rely on the mic and bluetooth of the adapter hidden in behind the HVAC. There's a few really decent and discreet bluetooth kits to choose from that will do a better job I'm hoping.

Good to know they fit in there, I found a few that you hook up in the boot which seems crazy.

If you like to do your own work, we can advise you on here as many members have experience with this engine and chassis.

I certainly do - thanks for the offer! I was hoping this forum would be a great source of helpful info.

I'll be getting the mechanic to do the trans oil + filter, but most other stuff I'd do myself. He's given me a really good price to do a worn rack end, the only issue spotted after a full inspection, which has made me quite happy. I might just get him to do that, as it includes a wheel alignment and I don't want to wreck the nice Toyo Proxes that are on there...

I'll be keeping a close eye on the cooling system, according to the mechanic it is in great condition, and a few hoses have been pre-emtively replaced already, but I know how much of a concern these can be at times.

I had a GROM bluetooth unit in my last e39. Relatively easy install, good sound and reliable connectivity. Is on the expensive end though. Best thing about it was how well it integrated into the factory headunit (mine was also pre 2002).

I was happy with mine and would recommend for E39 owners who want to keep the stock look but modern functionality

Thanks BozzaFC, I'll look into it.

  9. Hi there everyone, I've just picked up a new (to me) 528i, and I'm loving it! I'd like to put an AUX adapter in, and so far I have three options. I'm looking for the best sound quality.

It has the business tape deck with CD Changer, so I can get:

    1. An AUX adapter that replaces the CD Changer - this would be ideal if it plugged in at the back of the stereo rather than in the boot at the changer end.

    2. Tape adapter - I've got a tape stuck in my tape player, but I'm sure I can fix it. Apparently the Sony Walkman adapter, and a few others, actually give decent sound.

    3. Soldering to tape line outputs - this looks like a good option, but some people have stated that the audio quality is bad with this method.

All I need is a 3.5mm input jack in my system - I can't use the genuine BMW adapter as it only works for stereos built after 09/2002

    Here's the car:

These are such beautiful cars and yours is such a nice spec too.

Not sure what the service history on this is like but I would recommend you do the following to ensure she treats you right long term: change all fluids/filters (including trans); get someone/yourself to check over the cooling system - at this mileage it’s probably all original; replace what will be tired and perished vanos seals; and thoroughly check over suspension.

This is a beautiful example of a car that looks, feels and drives better than most new cars on the road (even newer versions of itself).

Enjoy, and welcome to E39 life!

Thanks for this, I'll definitely follow up on that advice. I took it to my mechanic who is a euro specialist and he said if I don't buy it he will, so that's a vote of confidence! He also said bring it in and he'll do the trans which I one thing I'd probably leave to the experts... I like to do most of my own work so I'll follow your recommendations for a start. The engine bay is super clean and the old owner just spent $800 on servicing so I'll be going back through the books today and setting what's been done.

Not bad for $4,400! At that price I jumped on it quick!

I do agree about the comparison to more modern cars, it's an amazing vehicle to drive and does not feel 20 years old.

  11. Hey there everyone, I just scored an amazing deal on our new 1997 E39 528i - I've had a bit of a thing for the E39 for a while now, and I managed to convince my wife that she liked them by finding this one just up the road from us - 94,000kms, NZ New. She was sold as soon as she drove it!

It's definitely the nicest sedan I've driven, it's a truly impressive car. Very happy to have joined the BMW club!
