Thought i should prob fill everyone in on whats been going on in my little world of BMW's. Well, leaks we never fixed put water all over my ECU. This caused the fuel pump to stay open and continue pumping, even if the car was off. Almost hydroliced another engine. luckily, the teeth on the flex plate and starter motor bent instead. Took it to S.D who charged me an arm and a leg to get it running again, however they didn't change the starter motor or flex plate, but it ran ok-ish. Over time the teeth wore down more and more on the flex plate and starter motor and it wouldn't start anymore. Ended up towing it over to my uncles workshop in tauranga(sp) and dropping the gearbox, putting in a new plate, and new starter motor. After A) having the wrong size starter motor after being told it was fine and B ), putting the flex plate on backwards, we eventually got it right, and now the car starts fine. Most times. Sometimes it wont turn the starter motor for some reason, we cant figure out why. However, the leaks have been fixed, and after stripping my car to find the leaks, and then leaving it stripped for about 4 months, its finally back together. i think that fills everyone it

That sucks. We should have got that m325i andy. then neither of us would have any problems.

Today when putting my interior back in the e30, my dad and i found a switch/button under the acc. pedal. We found the wire that went into it and hooked it up. When compressed by the acc. pedal the car "goes faster". Does everyone have this? Am I special? Ive just never found it before as it was dissconected. Any info on this would be great guys. Cheers, Ryan

So you could attach one to a convertible then???

I drive like more of an a**hole in my mums civic, coz its not mine, and like i said, it dosn't happen when im in her car. I have found myself doing that, its a waste of energy to get angry, i just brake, hope no one rear ends me, and drive away.

does anyone else get what im calling the "BMW treatment"? Whenever im in the e30, people constantly cut infront of me at roundabouts & intersections. this never happens when im in my mums civic. Does this happen to anyone else? I think this has been discussed before, if so, lock it up. Ryan.

Neal, You could always give this guy a ring and talk. Trademe M3 Probably wants more than the opening bid, but by the time you take into account shipping, duty, GST etc, it might be worth a phone call. 'course you gotta wait another 2 yrs...

Called down to Mosen this morning to check one of their engines. Sure enough the flex plates were mounted champhered side to the rear. Then I saw the photo's from the link you posted Bravo. Hmmm, could be a farm down.... How strange is that? Why would BMW go to the trouble of machining a champher that isn't used? Ah well, mystery solved. Back to the workshop.... Thanks for all your help Guys! (edit - one exclamation mark would have been fine dad.)

318is, thanks for the suggestions. Yep, flex plate DEFINITELY on right way round. Another starter being fitted, but it's exactly the same as one that came out Spacers... Good point Graham, did you have a 3mm spacer left over when you did your manual conversion???
-
Thanks William. I think I've found the answer. I was looking at the old block on the garage floor and checked the fit for the manual flywheel. I found that the flywheel goes onto a recess on the end of the crankshaft with just the one spacer (about 6/7mm thick with alignment hole) BUT, I also have another spacer about 3mm thick which fits on the same recess. This must go on BEFORE the flexplate for an Automatic box setup?. This would set the face of the flex plate back another 3mm. But that would only make it 19mm not 24mm as in your photo.

How big is this farm of yours Graham? Flex plate DEFINITELY on the right way round. Champhered edge facing starter motor. How many spacers should there be on the end of the crankshaft?
-
O.K., So we've replaced the flex plate and reassembled. Now we find that when the starter motor is bolted into place the bendix gear meshes permanently with the flex plate. (Not a good situation) We're quite sure we've assembled the flex plate correctly, as in spacer onto back of crankshaft, flex plate, then triangular plate to fix to torque converter. So why does the starter motor connect with the flex plate.? How far back should the face of the flex plate be from the bell housing? Mine sits 16mm away. The only way we've been able to make it work is to insert a spacer between the starter & bell housing. But that then gives alignment problems. Any help PLEASE!!!!
