Does the adjuster lever work ok, sometimes moving the column up/down and resetting can reduce noises. Sounds like your upper column has a problem from your description if your steering gear has been replaced.

Thanks for the replies, you confirmed my thoughts on the pattern type. Seems to a problem with reverse engagement, all other gears are ok. Seems the only way i can get reverse is to manually pull on the 5th/reverse selector fork with no selector rod installed. With the shifter unit on the back of the box and the selector rod installed it will just not go. (ALthough there is no bellhousing on and there will be so slop in the rod arrangement etc) Any ideas?

Thanks andy dont suppose you know if the neutral position is between 1st and 2nd or 3rd and 4th, ive rebuilt the box with some parts from another box and the gear lever selector arm just does not seem to sit right.

Hi can anyone confirm the gear positions for a e28 5 speed 528i? Is it (top to bottom, left to right) R-1-3-5,2-4 or is reverse down from fifth. I cant get reverse gear and im not the owner of the car in question and have never driven it, gearbox is currently out of car. Thanks in advance.

If you are talking about the small transfer hose pipe mount i think these can be switched out for a 2nd hand one. A new rad would be best, but expensive. I would not like to drive a car with a small leak for too long especially as import bmws seem to have some kind of fragile plastic disease which would suggest that the small pinhole could grow into a large problem later on.

Great post crunchy! How do you choose the sweep radius, angle of entry and length of your steel inlet tracts, is it just similar to standard or a complex calculation?
-
When do you need the car by? (Latest) and how low is it?

Dont like spiders myself, but the rest looks pretty smart. Has it got aftermarket park sensors?

+1 looks like hand free mic If you havent got the upside down nipple mirror (jokes welcome) with an electrical connection then how can you sync the remote. It could be that someone ordered an incorrect replacement key at some point and yours doesnt have factory remote central locking. (Even the dealers make mistakes, he he)

Anyone know if the brake linkages for small 6 and big 6 e28s are different. Car in question has had an engine swap at some point and a small (6mm) bit of threaded rod welded to the brake pedal so it touches the brake light switch. The linkages are adjustable but any more adjustment will leave the linkages hanging on 1-2 threads which is no where near ideal? Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Brake needs to push right to the floor to operate, FIXed

How are you bleeding the brakes? With a vacuum unit or manually by pumping the pedal etc? Ive always bled the brake system at every joint in the brake system that i can get to, but thats my personal preference. (its a brake system and its worth getting right) The union loss basically means the connections to the master cylinder, bias valves and pipe connections. you could try bleeding from the reservoir to the closest union and then move outwards to every caliper/cylinder.(furthest from the reservoir last). You may have issues with your brake master cylinder. Might be worth borrowing a vacuum bleeder/pressure bleeder if you can get your hands on one. Good luck -
Have you thought about using a jaycar temperature unit? They do a kit for about $40 that is fully adjustable with a variable hysteresis so you can alter on/off temps. They are real simple to build providing you got a decent soldering iron. I think they even do one that has a big lcd display too. http://www.jaycar.co.nz/productView.asp?ID...mp;form=KEYWORD

Thanks brent. Both had the steel shifter plate, so i guess i get to strip another gearbox. All good fun!

Thanks for the reply Brent, A friend of mine lost gears in his e28 528i. It was originally an auto (going by chassis no). Ive stripped the box to find the selector arm sheared off so was hoping to pull one out of another gearbox he has. This is where its confusing.... both have a 260 part numbers but the input shaft lengths and mounting holes and starter engagement depths are different. He bought the gearbox without knowing that the m20box is different than the m30 box so he is hoping that the selector arm will be the same. Realoem seems to think that it was only the 265 box in the e28 528i. Do you think the internals would be the same?

Looks awesome, maybe you should give up the day job?

Does anyone know if e28 was fitted with different manual gearboxes as standard? I think the one in the car (originally an auto) was from an e34 260 but am guessing. Did the e28 only come out with the split bell housing 265 or at some point were they putting in a non split 260? Thanks in advance.

Seen this a few times on E36, through both the door trim membrane and also drain hole overflow. Might be worth checking the secuity of your heater pipes, but you would know if it was a coolant leak by the smell i guess. I would clean the drains out, get the carpet out before it festers then water the car with the hose pipe to find your leak. Might be worth getting the DME (engine unit) out and taking the cover off the check for water ingress too (anti static strap suggested) as this is an expensive unit and problems can usually be avoided.

Apart from the info in kinetiks link, the e46 m3 sufferered from power steering leaks on both the pressure and return line. If my memory serves me correctly BMW modified the hose routing so early ones were more prone to leaks. Although not a major issue i would hate to think how much a pair of pas hoses cost! Most of the E46 M3 owners were informed that the engine needed the big end bearings replaced but some may have slipped through the net. If you contacted a bmw dealer with the chassis code they could tell you through the ISIS system wether it was carried out if not, they could also tell you if there were any other outstanding Quality Enhancements too (BMW term for non life threatening recalls i guess). Good luck with the import would be interesting to hear how you get on as ive often wondered about doing the same thing.

Before buying any parts ensure that the washer bottle is absolutely spotless (in the back of drivers wheelarch) If you dont use screen wash the filters get full of sh*t and wont transfer to jets. This is also true of the headlight wash filters.

Go to Grays. The trans can get the adaptations reset when you get oil changed.

Just thought Id say hi, just been given an e21 (project) and love working on cars. Need some inspiration for the new project so thought this would be the best place to get it. If any one needs vehicle specs might be able to help.

I would look at getting more than one engine at same time to lessen shipping costs and get the s50 motors out of the uk. They range in price from 1250 uk pounds (approx 2800 nzd) for the 3.0 and 1750uk up for the 3.2. I think you may even find some s54 engine on ebay uk if you keep a look out.
