  1. Do the new and old module have the same serial number?
I replaced the one in my E39 530i with a locally sourced unit, as the serieal numbers where exactly the same it was plug and play.
I beleive if they are different it will likley require coding. (?)

Gold wheels are definitely polarising, nice interior though. I wonder if the manual conversion has been certed.

I have seen this car in person. it is really well done, no exspence spared by the sounds. But as others have said you'd be hard pushed to recoup all that cash on a restore.

Take my E39 530i for example, all new M-Sport2 suspenion, new front seat cushion, restored xenon headlights, restored Style 42 18" wheels, factory or OEM+ every thing, new cooling system, new DISA, new Vanos seals, and on and on  - i stopped couitng how much I put into it, the reason being, its the cost of ownership / hobby whatever you want to call it - never a cost recovery excercise.

If i were to list it for sale, I'd be suproised if i got 10K given the market for E39s and what a little more can get you in terms of modern BMWs or other brands

you might be right about that - vaguely remember @hunter doing this to his 530i?

yep i did this :) - steering wheel and clock spring are the same. my car is auto though, so i also retro fitted the E46 M3 SMG paddle wheel and got those paddles working too

The loom is slightly different in wiring color only, you can't get the E39 one for reasonable money.  the E46 one is cheaper, and you just have to work out the wiring mapping for the colors.

See attached BMW tech article and my mapping i used to map E46 to E39 colors

You will need to splice into the LCM.

Should be able to pinpoint the noise on a hoist etc going by your description. What's the history of transmission servicing?

Hey man. Yeah it had a fluid change at Mosens probably about 4 years ago now. Maybe it needs another look at?

  5. Has been a slow year on the E39, as my last post was just over a year ago!

I have been focssed on a 2006 Mini Cooper S we bought back in Feb of this year. getting that sorted suspension and reliability wise in the eingine department, restoring some wheels etc etc. really fun little project.

The E39 has had the usal annaul carclub drives and maintenance all the work carried out previously means its such a joy to drive and have in a well maintained reay to go anywhere state.

however, recently i have been notived a bit, what i can best describe as a "whir" when in gear (D or R) particularly noticable in the garage or at low speeds, due to the fact it becomes the loudest noise inthat environment. if the car is in P or N and running it sounds totaly normal. but putting it in gear produces this "whir"

it isn't audable at road speeds and the auto trans shifts as good as it ever has. the noise got louder this week and id really like to adress it.

With the car idling in the driveway i cant hear any odd noises from the usualy bearing suspects like accessories drive pulley etc, im hoping it not torque converter or something heavy and expensive

  6. I have been followiong this build for a while on youtube. Interesting mash up of some cool BMW parts to make a unique vehicle.

the "as you go" commentary style is really good and with design decisions,  mistakes and corrections on show for others to learn.

Perfect weather to get these rear calipers painted this weekend. Started off with a sand down with 360 grit to ensure the primer had something to bite into. Then a double wash in wax & grease remover. I should have gone for a hot soap and water scrub first in hindsight.

Installed the old dust boots and stuffed rags into the piston bores to keep the paint out. For the bleeder, cross over pipe and inlet I used trimmed down foam ear plugs :D Saw that in a YouTube video and it works perfectly !! Taped over the mounting surface so it's not sitting on paint.

Painting was two coats of 'Paraloc' etching primer, then two coats of 2k single stage polyurethane. I did this 'wet on wet' at the suggestion of the folks at the paint place, so I did not have to wait for the primer to harden and then sand it ... definitely gets my vote as sanding calipers properly would be horrid.

Pretty much. They were suppose to come black caps but he changed his mind hah. BBS diamond black(more of a gun metal grey) wasn't doable for various reasons so instead used a Mazda black which is appears noticeably darker but is suppose to be lighter in sun

Be good to get some sun to see the true colour. lol.

  9. on part 61120016012, i got one from Fabian at Coombes here in Hamilton. in fact i got 2, one for my E46 and the same for my E39 a few years later and mapped the wires based on different colors.

Fun fact the E39 one does the same thing, but uses different colored wires, is NLA and cost a bomb.

  11. For a long while now my windscreen washer bottle hasn’t wanted to hold much fluid to wash the screen and the headlights. While I don’t use this too often, the frequent "Washer fluid low" messages in the dash were getting frustrating as was the puddle of water in my garage.

Removing the wheel liner and topping off the tank to spot leaks I noticed the base of the headlight pump was leaking as the rubber gasket was no longer sealing well enough and the same pump was leaking from where the output hose attached to it. Removing the hose revealed the O ring on the plastic nipple was hard and no longer sealing either.

Turning to FCP Euro I ended up getting new pumps, rubber gaskets and grommets for the whole system. This has replaced all the original equipment on the washer bottle to avoid rework in the future.

install is a breeze and a good opportunity for a clean-up and flush of the tank. A quick test reveals that there are no longer any leaks and everything is spraying as it should. 👍

  12. Great working with @Eagle yesterday to swap out the front top hats ala Sreten for some slightly lower E91 ones with a shorter height.

Wanting the front to come down a little to even out the ride height asthetics.

While in their the front brake pads were swapped too, to get rid of the everpresent "jingle" from the front right. the system was bled too, we found some air in the right rear which was interesting. I havent been able to go for a decent drive but the pedal feels better already and no noise.

  13. @Eagle are you referring to the KTM 390 engine issues. Thankfully this is a 2022 model and most of those bugs are gone from what I’ve read, and with a fresh tank of 98 octane it’s running really nice.

I wanted to adjust the chain today but don’t have the impact tools needed. Doh.

My old Ducati didn’t need impact drivers to undo anything. haha.

  14. In E39 adjacent news, both in terms of location and enjoyment :)

I have added a new 2-wheeled machine to the garage. I have got my hands on a Husqvarna Svartpilen 401 "Urban Scrambler"

This bike is replacing the reliable, fun (but now considered by me) slightly underpowered Aprilia 125 Motard

The new machine, a single cylinder ~43HP is an interesting beat to get used to and I really like it. Having had big V-twins before the lumpy engine is familiar and will benefit some light mods (may fave :). namely a smaller front sprocket and Fuel-ex light to even out fueling particularly at lower revs.
