  1. yeah, plan is new VM, MK4 nav conversion, reverse cam and replace the standard old jap FM tuner for an updated NZ one.

Going down a similar route. Have the mk4 & BM53 tuner. I haven't got around to adding RCA's mod to the bm53 yet . Have a bunch of amps and speakers to replace the factory setup. Brought a netbook with 700 odd cd's to replace the cd stacker running via de Ibus adaptor controlled via the 16:9 screen. The netbook also has a usb bluray player cd/dvd/bluray duties should they be needed.

Also want to add reverse cam and parrot bluetooth to replace jap telephone module at a later date.

  2. I do not know the offset of the wheels, but has anyone else had rubbing issues with 225/50/16's on an E36 sedan?

Had an issue running acs type I's 16x8 et 35's with 225/55/16's on the rear of my old E36 325i Coupe. Rear arches were rolled. Had problems with Uniroyals rubbing on the odd occasion , but bridgestones seemed ok. Was also running BMW standard M suspension setting which meant tyres lasted well.

    Fonts never caused any problems.

  3. Need a new roof for my bmw, canvas vinyl anything will do! its a 1991 E30.

remember see Le Mans Upholstery in Wellington advertising Roofs for e30's and Mx5's in Wellington. Checked them out when the wife was going to buy a leaky E30 convertable a few years back. Phone: 04-384 8616

  4. Another way to clean is to use shaving foam. I did this with my motorcycle leathers after 15,000 km of South American dirt roads on a motorcyle on the advice of a lady that makes motorcycle leathers. Leathers came up looking near new (black / yellow / white) . Shaving foam with lanolin is also great for older leather as it cleans and moisturizes the leather.

For exterme dirt / last resort try oven cleaner. Just don't leave it to act for too long. I have seen this do wonders on 50 year old plus leather and vynil car seats removing the most stuborne stains and dirt.

Same with hydrogen proxoide used on old white plastics .... They go from yellow to white again. A few things I've learnt while restoring 1960's minis.

  5. Thanks for the replies guys. I haven't had time to check the relays or anything else but I have noticed my new battery was shorting on the bonnet (thankfully no real damage). I sorted that and have been driving it today and it seems fine. Could that have been causing that kind of trouble with the car? I'm not a noob with car electronics, having modified/ changed wiring harnesses, engine types and modified ECUs in my mitsis. I am however new to the ways of the Bimmer and thier tipical german behavior

Sounds exactly like the problem. Most battery's around 600 cca + are close to bonnet in terms of terminals due to size. Had a similar problem on my e30 when fitting the largest battery possible (680 cca)to run the stereo / car (before optima batteries where around). Best you can do is get a battery terminal cover for the plus side and duck tape the inside of bonnet above the plus terminal. If it was shorting out the ecu and onboard diagas. will go mental going between 13.8 volts and 0.

Also make sure that the battery is strapped / clamped down properly so the battery isn't moving around.

  6. Mmm now you mention it, it probably only shows up on the High OBC when using the steering wheel controls.

The 4:3 screen on mine isn't great, it has a vertical line through it, but still works for now.

I got a CD Stacker from a 2005 E46 which has enabled me to use MP3 CD's, however if I go passed Track 99 it gets a bit upset and locks up.

Hopefully someone else has some more insight.

I would disconnect the battery and unplug the Nav unit, then reconnect battery (so that it reboots) and see if that helps.

I think there's a Blue connector for the video signal.

Does the 4:3unit have the BM tuner or is it built in ? One solution is that if these use a BM53 / 54 tuner module it's possbile to reflash the eprom that contains the software for operation of the Mp3 / Cd stacker function. The re-flash for more recent software however is dependant on the assocatied ROM version next to the eprom.

  7. Just an FYI, John Key had an E30 at 22 in 86, and came from a house of abject poverty - do the math.

Similar start here , but didn't understand what generating passive income was until about 7 years ago. Instead chose to work for an employer rather than the risk and reward of running own business. He's worked smart in terms of making money , I haven't but aren't complaining.

    Back on topic

On NZ's favour we have cheap car insurance and lower servicing costs than the UK. A London based M5 / M3 / 911 can easily cost 2500 - 5000 pounds a year for insurance. The local BMW dealer will also charge upwards of 95 pounds an hour for servicing. Petrol is more as well.

  8. I'm looking to get into club racing and hillclimb events in a "Mini" and the odd track day in the M3 and maybe the wifes 328i

Often the events stating cotton overalls and crash helmet but I'm not sure if to buy standard cotton overalls , or a one or two piece racing suit. I know it's all to do with saftey , but the prices seem to go up drastically been basics and two piece. I'm probably never going to do a race series but would keen on a Targa event at some stage.

Given the level of entry motorsport what would you recommend ? At this stage I just have a highend motorcycle helmet.
