325_driver 422 Report post Posted October 3, 2007 that boot subject gave me an idea to put this topic up as ever since ive owned a bmw, i have been a magnet to car trouble some my fault some not What is the worst sticky situation youve found your self in, on the motor way, in the middle of no where. Or worst chain of events that youve had Coolant pipes bursting, engines blowing up, tanks of oil dissapearing, tyres popping, any thing, you get the idea Ill explain my last 3 months cause its been halarious in a funny way excuse me if its a bit long, but some of you might enjoy reading this since every ones gotta have had some experience of car CRAP! We have a very rough drive way, im driving to drop brother off, and i hear a loud thud on the way up the drive way half way into town and the oil pressure light flickers on every now and then, didnt think much of it, going round a few round abouts, and start to wonder why the car starts drifting in 4th gear and so on. Park up, and go to check it out, turns out the loud thud was me putting a hole in OIL SUMP, and i drove 20 kms with the hole, no damage done guys, the front nd back tyres were covered in oil too !!! So week later, get the sump fixed, by my self, wow, and, driving alone, oil light comes on, turns out a pipe that replaced the oil cooler has almost perished and has once again sprayed oil every where, front tyres again lol. fixed it a day later, and is fine for 3 days, then on the way home, decide to see how fast i can get down a hill, wondering why when i hit 180kmh my speedo and rev limiter go flying up, turn into my road and the oil pressure light comes on again!!! trying to find a safe place to park up, the car isnt making it up a hill, finally i make it up there, turn car off, check it out, sure enough the pipe has come OFF, and has emptied a tank of oil on the underbody of my car, including back tyres ! which explains the speed flying up, and loosing traction up a hill. take the pipe off in the dark, unscrew the hose clamp with a random bit of metal i found on the side of the road. lol (in total i went through about 4 tanks of oil, in the most various of places and situations) week later, i go to purchase my new car, from wellington, what a drive down. answer a cell phone call in taihapi and speed creeps up with out me noticing and get a speeding fine because of it, get down to wellington, rego looks fine, got an outa date wof, standard stuff, driving back to palmy to stay for the night as i live in tga, and we go through a check point, cops check up on the rego, and discover that the reg has expired!! had a false rego sticker in it, so they try and impound my car, i some how wind out of that and pay 450 $ to get my car towed to tga, lucky. since it was going to cost 250 to get it towed back to who i bought it off, (turns out, if he put the rego on hold 2 days before i bought it, it would be all fine, now i have to re vinn it !!!) any way, car arrives at my house, go to park it up, and start walking away from my new car, turn arround and notice a severe ammount of steam exiting the bonnet, yes ... a coolant pipe burst the moment i parked it up. INTEResting . . . . . got a fine on the way home again, while answering a cell phone again !!!!! turns out cops were doing a blitz the weekend i went down, because of numerous young drivers dying in car crashes or some thing. I havent had fines in atleast a year, so thats an odd ammount of cop trouble in 3 days. lol Right, just recently, to end my 3 months of unbelievable events, im waiting for my work mates to finish then i get bored, so i start spinning it up in my drift happy 325, being 3 am tuesday night i wasnt expecting any one would be watching or awake to cause trouble, go to park up, and sure enough sirens arrive with in minutes, . . .. . . . so now my car is impounded, and i have a court case over my "substained loss of traction" turns out where i did the drift, a camera was right beside the road . . . . ill stick to private roads from now on. So ive blabbered on for long enough, but im sure you guys have had plenty of situations, where you stand in unbelief, would love to see what sought of crap you guys have wound your self into, and stuff youve run into thats just made your day if you know what i mean. lol hope youve enjoyed this, Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Worst would have to be having been the meat in a sandwich in my E class, and also my E's alternator shitting itself on the harbour bridge and breaking down.... MADBMA 0 Report post Posted October 3, 2007 i popped my clutch in the middle of nowhere, car would only drive at about 5 kph had to wait a few hours for mate to come and tow me home, was a bit embarrising to as i was trying to get some wheel spinning action, blew the clutch had smoke pissing out of the gearbox, took awhile for me to realise the smoke wasnt coming from the rear tyres, got it all on video to...... Let Gus drive - valve fell out of head and killed motor. Average. Driving back from A1GP on the backroads from Taupo - a hard 2nd to 3rd gearchange lunched the turbos gearbox. $1000 towing fee. QuickSilver 0 Report post Posted October 3, 2007 old car - bought car, blew head gasket, and destroyed half of my engine, had it rebuilt $1.500, then someone jabbed a screw driver through my radiator lost water, drove on motorway etc etc blowing it up again, $800 this time, then it was broken into $600 worth of stuff stolen, then it was broken in a 2nd time $600 stuff stolen aggaaaain, then the whole car got stolen, taken on a police chase, two tyres popped, driving on mags, = whatever car value was, and then incidentally it wasnt worth much because instead of the insurance paying $4000 they paid market value of $1.5, intermitant car - bought it to fix, cost me $600 in fines (just by driving round my block) , no rego, no wof and failing to indicate (since indicators were still on my to-do list) spent $400 to try and fix, at which point it got stolen. bmw e30 - current car , so far, stuck thermostat $0, ding to rear about $600 but it was getting all resprayed anyway, so it just sped up the process, and blown fuses $0.30, mild in comparison lol. Not Community Service. Hard working PD. My dumb ass mate did this. Bye bye Saturdays for 2 years. My BMW hasn't given me any trouble yet. I brought it for $1000. Sold the Mtech 1 kit for $800 worth of parts. The only complaint I have is that it has taken me so long to get it track ready. It has only gone today to get its sunroof removed and goes to Road Race and Rally soon to get its cage. Then comes the put all the new parts in stage. However my 180 has been a sh*t of the thing since I brought it. My previous ones have been fine. This one is cursed or something. Cost me $2000 to get a friggin little dent in the chassis rail removed so I could comply it. Then the car has run very rich for months for no apparent reason. LSD decided it didn't want to spin two wheels anymore. So I shimmed it. That failed about 3 weeks later and killed the diff. So I got a 2 way for it. And thats leaking now. So it has to come out again. Then at puke the other week the friggin ecu or fuel pump failed coming off the hairpin. And it melted a piston. hybrid 1043 Report post Posted October 4, 2007 Hit a wash out on esmonde road at 1am in the pissing rain. Broke, Control arm linkage, moved the strut tower 5mm bent both wheels and rooted two tires. The loose wheel then ripped into my custom front guards / fenders and and the m3 side skirts (all brand new 6months prior including the paint job) Car off the road for 8 weeks getting put back to its former glory. then it happened again, just not as bad came away with bent rims. so, new set of wheels and its back to normal. pureboiracer 0 Report post Posted October 4, 2007 driving to my mates house in wellington one night and felt a bit of shuddering didnt think too much of it. came up to some traffic lights and a clk had stopped in front of me. put the brakes on and found i had none. ripped up the handbrake swerved round the clk sideways (it was raining too) just squeezing somehow inbetween the clk and the sidewalk. went and parked it up. went to go and get a tow truck to take it back to my house and found out that i was missing my $600 sterio along with my passenger window. got home and pulled of the wheels and found i was missing a caliper. and my wheel was soaked in brakefluid. CamB 48 Report post Posted October 4, 2007 Not my fault Somewhere around the start of the 4th stage of the 2002 Targa (prolly the only one I'll ever do given the price ), the nut spun off the oil pump sprocket and I had zero oil pressure. Outcome is obvious... My fault Did up the rear wheel nuts pretty much finger tight - forgot to torque them when the car was on the ground. Rear end started making funny noises halfway to Matamata (from Auckland!). Didn't have a wheel brace in the car, despite the fact I was driving to a tarmac hillclimb... Also didn't have a jack! Borrowed a wheel brace from a dude driving past (I nosed the car into a bank to get each rear wheel off the ground in turn), and kept driving down, all good. Halfway through at the lunch brake my co-driver noticed a fair amount of oil leaking from the oil cooler (fortunately a pipe problem, easily fixed). I'm actually really pleased that I haven't had to fix anything on the car for two whole events now. For ages there always seemed to be something that was bung... ducatiss 1 Report post Posted October 4, 2007 (edited) Not a BMW but when I had my Audi in the early 90's I had the following saga: 1. Going home one night started running rough. managed to get home and asked garage (local county garage) to check in the morning. They found compression low in no 4 Cyl. Gave them the go ahead to pull down motor to see what the issue was. Found badly scored bore, rings broken etc etc. 2. Gave them the go ahead to fix - Engine block sent to machine shop who rebored and supplied the pistons etc. Engine re-assembled at country garage. Valves also replaced along with main bearings etc. Total bill about 4000 3. Noticed during running in that the car detonated badly and overheated. Took back to garage who diagnosed collapsed hoses and replaced the lot. Also flushed out radiator etc. Spend a great deal of time playing round with the timing to get it to run without knocking but finally did. 4. On a fast run and noticed knocking again. Pulled into another small country garage and asked them to check check the timing. Then for whatever reason the "mechanic" decided there is a fault with the distributor and pulls it out to check the advance mechanism (which was fine). The idiot then puts the cog on the end of the distributor the wrong way round (unbeknown to me) and puts it all back - asks me to crank the car. It fires once then nothing. he pulls the distributor out again to find several teeth had broken off and fallen into the sump!! 5. Car has to be towed back to original garage but its Fri night and no-one can do it- Im left stranded for hours. 6. Following Monday - Original garage pulls off the sump and fishes out the broken cogs and orders new part (3 weeks ex Germany). I go insane at that point and threaten to sue both garages. Car is given to a specialist mechanic in the City (in hindsight this is where is should have gone in the first place) he pulls the head off and measures the cylinder capacity and compression ratio and deduced that the compression ration is 13.25 to 1 !!! No wonder it knocks on super 98 Fuel. Also tells me that the incorrect Pistons have been fitted - correct ones are dished - the onces fitted have flat tops. 8. I take a case to the MTA - they were no help whatsoever and stuck up for their members. I take the case to court. Result was that my engine was reassembled correctly and I did another 1000 kms before finding one morning that I had no oil pressure. Result the oil pump was shagged. This was replaced (at my expense !!). Drove the car a further 20,000 happy km's before the gearbox sh*t itself. Replaced with 2nd hand unit and sold the car. 9. M325is 0 Report post Posted October 4, 2007 Bout 4years ago, driving from Tauranga to Auckland in my 86 318i was just about to come into Ngatia (6km out) booted it to pass a double trailer truck, sounds blaring completely oblivious to to temp gauge, half way through passing truck the car shuts down... WHAT THE f**k!!! the truck passes me on the inside I pull over, there is smoke billowing from the hood now, pop the bonnet and there are bloody flames coming off the exhaust manafold shield thingy!! Man I was bawling!!! Stupid me didnt know what the f**k to do so poured water on it, lol, this I think caused more trouble. 15mins later my hero in shining armour stopped, a navy seal, hahaha I sh*t you not, he had coolant and oil in his car (the car was dry) so we filled it up waited 30mins and crawled into town at 30km/hr with him following with the hazzards on. 1 1/2hours later on dads car trailer home... TDP 0 Report post Posted October 5, 2007 Totally my fault. My Alfasud had an oil pressure guage and an oil pressure warning light. Driving home from watching a race at Pukekohe I notice that the warning light has come on. Being a conscientious and more significantly, broke motorist, I pull over and investigate. Guage is showing plenty of pressure, engine is running fine and (for once) has ample oil. After much shoulder shrugging from all involved I drive it home. Expert consultation reveals that the sender units for the warning light are a known weak point and I am advised to discounnect the light and go off the guage which I duly do for several months. It's worth mentioning at this point that the thing had a voracious thirst for oil. It was like running a two-stroke. You'd pull into the petrol station forecourt and ask the attendant to fill up the oil and check the fuel and water please. I knew of this insatiable thirst. So I have no excuse. Some months later I'm setting out on a trip to look at a car I probably can't afford. I notice that the oil pressure guage is reading zero, nada, nothing, zilch. Being a lazy (and still broke) motorist, I give the guage a tap, shrug my shoulders and decide that the sender must be broken. 40 or so motorway kms later I'm on my way back from looking at a 205 GTi that I definitely couldn't afford. Suddenly the engine starts making an odd noise. And losing power. And then clattering like a small army of bulldozers is trying to ram its way out of the sump. I pulled over to the side of the road and, for want of anything better to do, opened the bonnet to be met by a wall of heat. Starting to understand what had happened, I pulled the dipstick. It was the cleanest, driest, most devoid of lubrication dipstick in the history of motoring. Electric motors would have more oil in them than my Sud did. It had got so hot it melted a big-end bearing and extruded it out past the big-end cap, badly scouring the crank journal in the process. I filled it up with oil and drive it home (noisily). TDP 0 Report post Posted October 5, 2007 Not my fault (I think). I'd just flown up to Auckland to pick up the BMW which I was intending to drive back down to Marlborough. I went and collected it and carefully drove it home. I then not so carefully took it for a 'familiarisation' drive. That's when I discovered that as soon as I got the revs to 5 and a half grand the car would stall and die. And not restart. Until it felt like it. I didn't consider this a huge problem as I could easily make the trip without needing the upper end of the rev range and the car would usually eventually restart. My parents disagreed and suggested I fly back down leaving the car with them to be seen to by an auto electrician. They would pay for my various flights as I was still broke. Indeed my financial situation had caused a paradigm shift in the definition of broke. I reluctantly agreed. A week later and I had flown back to collect my now flawlessly running car. I loaded it up, and my far too generous Mum took me round to the local petrol station to pay for a full tank of gas. Most of which the car deposited on the petrol station forecourt. Turns out the tank leaks if you brim it. To this day it still does. I spent most of the morning running around car parts places trying to find the correct o-ring to seal the tank. To no avail. Against the requests of my parents I announced my intention to push on anyway. It was early afternoon when, having promised to not get too badly burnt, I set out for Wellington. The car performed faultlessly and indeed I revelled in its pure responses and easy power. I was just outside of Cambridge and indulging in a little easy power revelling (in a passing lane) when there was a loud bang and the engine began running like it really didn't mean it. I made it to the side of the road just as the engine gave up altogether. No amount of expletive assisted cranking on the starter made any difference. Swallowing my masculine pride I called the AA who found me in no time at all. In even less time the AA guy had the distributor cap off and was showing me the rotor which is located onto the distributor drive shaft by a thick plastic key ...which had sheared clean off. The AA guy, who is a personal hero of mine, gave me a tow back to Cambridge. Suffice to say there was nobody in Cambridge that had parts for a nearly 30 year old German car at 4 o-clock on a Saturday afternoon. Several hours later those other personal heroes of mine, my parents, rolled into town with a hastily borrowed car trailer. By 10 o'clock that night I was back in Auckland in possibly the foulest mood of my life. Two more flights and a week later the car never missed a beat as it carried me the length of the North Island in surprising comfort and with consummate ease. Incidentally, whilst waiting in Cambridge for my parents I took the sardonic advice of the AA guy and bought a Lotto ticket. I won $30. Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
