j_tomo 0 Report post Posted January 26, 2008 hey all after not being able to find anything for my e30 325i i forked out 20k for a very tidy e36 1995 m3 its done 83,000ks its a manual jap import and its sluggish! what little power it has comes in after 5,000rpm it would be bugger all faster than my old 325, in a straight line its actualy slower than a standard 94 vtech prelude it seems to run fine, no noises or smoke is the jdm modle detuned? maybe i was expecting to much from the mighty m3? any idears? cheers jeremy
BM WORLD 1283 Report post Posted January 26, 2008 put it on a dyno , should be about 160-170kw at the wheels. try gavin at hi-velocity. north shore .
mr E34 11 Report post Posted January 26, 2008 Did you take it for pre-purchase inspection? NEVER buy anything without one. Take it to Velocity where Brent said for assessment.

It should be producing linear power from just off idle right through to redline, with your grin getting progressively wider. Get it checked out. Something is definitely wrong if it is only doing anything over 5k rpm. :>)

ecko_complex 3 Report post Posted January 27, 2008 Are you the guy that text me about buying an M3? Get a Dyno, if that's reading ~170kw at the wheels then you must have had a hell of a 325.

Im impressed Good luck with the M3 J Tomo, Id just plug it into a fault scanner, that will tell you if all is working properly, including vanos. j_tomo 0 Report post Posted January 28, 2008 i was after the faq that tells you comon faults and how to fix them, i found one for my old vr4 and fixed the leaking capasitors myself. i think ill have to make a day trip to chch and get it scaned and dyno'd its running ok now still a bit lacking down low and doesnt feel like the beter part of 300hp when i picked it up i filled her up with 95 octane then read the manaul that states i need a min of 98 so i put 1/2 a tank of the good bp stuff plus a bottle of octane booster and its slowly getting quicker maybe a sticky vanos? and echo complex i didnt call you about your m3 and yes my 325 is quick (low ratio diff /uk import) cheers jeremy

hybrid 1043 Report post Posted February 1, 2008 Remember its not the same instant feeling as turbo power, the s50 has it strength in the mid range. ITs more like 'real' hp. if you were to line it up against a turbo car of the same HP you would win. (generally speaking) As others have suggested, go see Gavin and Hi Velocity. Hes one of the only people in the BMW tuning business that has the equipment to test your real HP. He can plug it in and see exactly whats going on. Its not too expensive to do so either. cainchapman 0 Report post Posted February 1, 2008 From the look of his comment about going to Christchurch, I'm picking he's in the South Island (try to put a location in your signature). DCH have a hub dyno and can tell you whether it's putting out the correct power. Be warned, that if you car has oxygen sensors before and after the cat, you may be heading for a big engine bill. As they lean out at the top end.
drifty325i 0 Report post Posted February 1, 2008 I wouldnt recommend taking out the intake trumpet,if you test it on the dyno im sure you will see negative gains from it
Greg111 13 Report post Posted February 1, 2008 As everyone else has said, there is something wrong for sure if the only power comes after 5000rpm, mine has power from start to stop, air filter and fuel filter are more than likely an issue here i'm thinking, (if you havent already checked). An AA check usually cover these things, which i'm guessing you didn't get???
mr E34 11 Report post Posted February 1, 2008 Just a thought Jeremy, you should really dyno 1st so you know where you ARE and then do mods so you know where you are going.
