Fuel consumption city driving only

I put 65 litres in the tank and used the BP Ultimate. Only used the M button twice and scared a passenger both times. Petrol light came on at 1/4 tank luckily. Haven't tried the LC (Launch Control) as yet. I never heard of it until I read this thread in the US ...

Some interesting statistics. I will run some more tests on my car and see what I get. I hope to get over 500 from about 60l of fuel for inner city driving. So far I appear to be on track.

I've got a 1998 735i and get about 14.7L/100k around Hamilton.

Get about 540k out of a tank. About 85L in the tank and 10L in the reserve that what it says in the e38 book.

Large displacement engines cars are more fuel economical than small displacement cars in many cases here.

Maybe to do with the more torquey, more lazy and lower rev nature of the high c.c. engines?

LOL, I noticed that too. I am surprised to see no diesel owners boasting about their fuel economy. My mate who owns a 320d claims he can get 1000kms out of his 60l tank!

I'll chip in too - especially since I've got a big torquey motor

Combined cycle at the moment for this tank of gas (at least 80% town, the rest proper driving ) is reading 11.3l/100km

You just quickly get into 6th and let it idle along at about 60km/h - works sweetly

I have done a lot worse by making extreme use of the loud pedal around town!

has anyone monitored and compared fuel use when using 95 and 98?

my current car (not a BMW) uses a heap more gas on 98. on 95 i vary 11.5-12.0l per 100k and on 98 i'm now 13.0-13.5l per 100k with exactly the same driving

After ~5000kms, average consumption mixed between open rd and city: 11.94l/100km, claimed 9.9l/100km.

1996 E36 318ti

After ~8000kms, average consumption mostly suburb with a little bit of city driving: 11.57l/100km.

The newer the BMW, the better its fuel consumption will be. Same as the CO2 emission. I think my E60 produces around 220g/km(?) while the LCI model is about 178g/km.

my e28 M535i 1986 with 480,000km on it used to get with std M30 (218hp)engine about 10.5L per 100km

around town and about 8.5L on a trip , now with a M5 engine and different diff to match the M5 engine it does about 12L per 100km and about 11L on a trip .

not bad for 290HP i think.

a bit better than currant model M5 by the looks .

if i push it all the time about 13.5L per 100km

my e36 coupe 92 325i 5spd does about 11.5L per 100km and not much better on a trip . i though there was something wrong with it but looks to be about normal.

my e34 i had with hartge engine did worse 14-15L per 100km with suzanne driving and a bit better with me driving .

a 750il i owned year ago used to do about 16L per 100km but they weigh a 2 tonnes and i pushed it when ever i could . 110L tank with potential on a trip to do 10.5L per5 100km .

best car i had was a 87 VL commodore 3L straight six nissan engine 5spd manual with tall diff used to get upwards of 700km per tank on a trip (60L tank)

other factors too i suspect.The larger engine cars maybe also owned by older drivers...Round town i drive like a granny,always get dragged off at the lights.I can drive from wellington to lower hutt and never exceed 2500 3000 rpm.Nothing to prove....

my old M30 gets marginally better economy on 95-96 than the recomended 91,prolly only offsets the price diff...

On 95 I got 16L/100k and now that I use only 98 I get 14.7L/100k out of my 735i.

My old '92 E36 325i used to do 14.2 litres per 100km, city driving, 80% easy, 20% a bit of a blat.

And I used ALL 60 Litres (420km)

88 325i auto, running 95, 33L gave me 300kms, 9.1L/100km but inlcudes open road driving

Can do the Upper Hutt - Wellington commute at about 11 litre / 100km if you get a good run (which is almost never!). Stop lights on what is basically a motor way is absolute shite for economy when you car is as heavy as a 740.

But then most of the time I'm in the 740 economy is not my objective. I enjoy slipping it into "1" and planting it, flicking it up to "2" and backing off at just under 110kph. There is usually a big gap back to the cars behind.

I love how subtle the 740 is - no big exhausts showing, no spoilers.

about 16 to 17l/100km and that would hardly hitting 60 on a 8km drive to work, and thats why i dont use it in town.

did a trip from chch to oamaru and back and got 11.5l/100km and that was passing everyone that i wanted to and cruise control set at 105km/h

We were test driving a 335i last year and before we thrashed it we reset the fuel consumption. Going extremely fast (past what the book said it was limited to ) it said we were only doing 6.9l per 100km? Does that sound right?
