Service light resetter

Not too sure if this has been posted before but i'm after a way to reset my service light as i do all my own servicing etc, Jeff Grey BMW charge $50 and half an hour just to do that, i think there is a special tool you can purchace but after a cheaper way (if possible)

Any help appreciated.

What you will need to do is connect pins 7 and 19 with a paperclip for four seconds. This will reset the oil service light. Here is the list of pins and what they are supposed to do:

Pin Description

1 - TD Signal

2 - Not occupied

3 - Not occupied

4 - Not occupied

5 - Not occupied

6 - Not occupied

7 - Service Interval Reset

8 - Not occupied

9 - Not occupied

10 - Not occupied

11 - Not occupied

12 - Generator Charge Indicator

13 - Not occupied

14 - Voltage; Hot At All Times

15 - Diagnostic Data Link

16 - Voltage; Ignition Switch in Run

17 - Not occupied

18 - Programming Line

19 - Ground

20 - Diagnostic Data Link

OK, using a paperclip, Bend your paperclip it so it looks like this:

Use pliers if you have to.

Turn the ignition key to position II, but don’t start the car. Get out of the car and go to the data port. Always connect pin 7 first. Once you’ve inserted one end into pin 7, insert the other end into pin 19 and hold it there for 4 seconds. Then remove the paperclip. Check the dash and the oil inspection lights should be reset. The reset occurs upon removal of the clip.

IMPORTANT: DO NOT HOLD IT THERE FOR LONGER THAN 10 SECONDS or you may inadvertently reset your inspection I/II interval.

That tools pretty expensive just to reset the service light or does it do other things too?

Obviuosly i don't want to fry my electrics if i try do the pin 7 and 19 but it does seem pretty easy to do?

I don't know as I havn't pulled one apart, but at a guess those cheap tools on trademe just have a pcb inside with a couple of resistors and a fuse. I wouldn't use a paper clip, but I DO use a bit of fused wire. Works every time and safe.

The only benefit of the tool is you can't get the wrong pins by mistake.

The tool BMW use is also a diagnostic tool etc.

good point, but my house is worth more and I still paint it myself, and fix the plumbing etc. If you want to be dead sure you are not going to cock it up buy the over-priced gizmo (that is possibly poorly made and prone to failure anyway). Or if you have a few clues, and use some common sense, DIY all the way baby.

if it's just for resetting service lights - piece of wire all the way! just make sure you put the wire in the right holes.

Well there you go, piece of wire with a 7.5 amp fusable link, nothing could go wrong then, just gotta put it in the right hole

7.5 amp fuse - Nothing go wrong -Don't bank on it. May as well use a nail.

More like a 1 amp for protection

Personaly I wouldn't use any type of wire

I only suggested 7.5 amp fuse as anything is better than nothing... you will still do damage using a 7.5 amp fuse if you do it wrong. However the fuse might stop you burning yourself while you cock it up.
