M or not? is a motorsport E30 same as M-tech?

Recommended Posts

I've always understood an M325i to have:

- Mtech body kit (front, sides, rear and spoiler)

- Mtech suspension

- sports seats

- Mtech steering wheel

- dark headliner

- 15x7 basketweave alloys

- an LSD.

Ah here we go - I was mostly right:

I have a funny feeling you guys are being put to the test here. I think Portnoy is testing you on your E30 knowledge.

No criticism intended... just my observation :D

What Cam and Gus said, but basically if you want to know, call BMW NZ and ask for the build spec of your car. If it has "M-technic package" or something similar written on the build sheet, you're all good.

Also did standard 325i have bilsteins, ABS, and 4 wheel disc brakes?

I've only ever seen them with sports seats. Not that that proves much.

I always understood Mtech to include different springs and shocks (Bilstein) - one would hope that most M325is have new shocks by now though.

4 wheel disks yes (all 325i). ABS not sure.

If I'm being tested, I hope I pass.

I also thought the bilsteins were only the sports shocks on the early ones, with Boge shocks (different valving to stock) on the later ones? Also I think the sports suspension has larger sway bars.

I've seen a few 325i with 4 wheel discs, ABS, and (old) bilsteins so that doesn't make an M-tec car. Best way to tell is probably headlining, least likely to have been changed.

Your turn...ask one

Rear sway bar on standard 325i or none at all?

Do ALL motorsports have an LSD?

How about check light box on roof lining front of rear vision mirror?

I'm asking as I'm looking at a possible motorsport tomorrow. Want to get all info prior to checking

The question was who makes the non Mtech ones

What's the differences re West German assembled 86 E30 M/325i and 325i coupe?

THANKS!

according to carfax, your car is just a PFL e30 325i with an m3 kit not a genuine motorsport e30...correct?

Carfax link

not trying to have a dig at you, just and observation.

Carfax does not distinguish sh*t and glitter, no.

that would not make any difference to the spec of the vehicle, under the kit its an ordinary e30 325i which is what its registered as i presume.

The link is in my post above.

does your car have a black roof lining?

makes for interesting reading.

registration should if kiwi new should go something like this:Make: BMW

Model: 325I

Year: 1989

Submodel: M SPORT

Definately the headlining (black) and True M Sport has a slightly closer ratio gearbox:

325i 325i M Sport

1st 3.83 3.35

2nd 2.20 2.03

3rd 1.40 1.36

4th 1.00 1.00

5th 0.81 0.81

HJ or TNN stamped into the casing

I have 3 genuine M Sports and several replica`s or M Tech kitted models.

With the real thing in front of me it is easy to suss out the fakes.

To try and give you some more info and my experience:

1) Bilsteins are often found on standard 325i, either fitted later or added as an option when ordered from the dealer.

2) ABS was again an option on standard 325i vehicles so can be found on non-MSport models

3) Discs all round I think was standard on ALL 325i models, not just M-Sports.

I hope that helps.

If you're trying to suss out whether a car is a fake or not, just get hold of the VIN number and check the build sheet. I think you can even do it on-line somewhere, as mentioned in other threads.

To do it on the spot biggest clues would be 1) LSD - difficult but not impossible to add and 2) the black headlining.

Good luck in your search!
