arros 0 Report post Posted October 15, 2008 Looks like I've sold the E34 540. Guy from Palmy flying up to get it (must be keen!) Just wondering what is out there for (lower) price. E39s have come down in price quite a bit. Would expect higher mileage at this lower price. Prefer Auckland area/surrounds.
Apex 693 Report post Posted October 15, 2008 The guy I sold my 545i to was offered 10 grand for his 190,000km NZ new 2001 535i so that is an indication as to what they fetch wholesale.
martyyn 2 Report post Posted October 15, 2008 10 large for a 535 thats done 195k kms....I assume he bit the guys hand off. Ive seen those go for much less than that. 528's are going for little more than 6-7k with plenty of 540's around the 10k mark. Take your time and have the money ready to go when you see what you want and you'll be fine.
BM WORLD 1283 Report post Posted October 15, 2008 go for the 540i . should get a highish millage for around $8-10k and low K's $12-15K but get the pre varnos 4.4L models so you dont get the stupid water cooled alternator and all the vanos problems we all know that can happen . bmw.maniac 1 Report post Posted October 15, 2008 540i definately. 535i's are supposed to have the highest fuel consumption of the e39s, plus being as slow as a 530i

allan 295 Report post Posted October 15, 2008 Eddy! I will bit have you ever driven a 530 they are no slug off the mark and I see your ride is an 88 318 how does that match up? The 5 series have taken a bath price wise so a good one should be out their. The 540 or a good 530 would be my choice so have the $$$$ ready when it does just my 2 cents worth. E39s have come down in price quite a bit. Would expect higher mileage at this lower price. Prefer Auckland area/surrounds. Good thinking. There are plenty around at the moment and if you are patient enough you will bag yourself a bargain. The perceived complexity and fuel consumption of E39's has seen them get into E36 prices. But, when I think about it, you could get yourself a very very nice E38 7-Series for under $10k - you will often find them for sale cheaper than a comparable year and km E39. Show me a 2001 (Faclift) NZ New 535i for less than 10K and I’ll buy you a box of beer wise guy Well, think if you actually stop to think about it, $10k is good money from a dealer. The dealer would have to recondition it for the yard (usually $500-1500) and then retail it at a level which would see them make some profit. Hopefully they would make $3k on a car like this, so they would advertise it for $16-17k (as they will never sell it without haggling or over trading). If you saw an E39 travelled nearly 200km for $17k, you would think it was rather expensive. Also, the fact that it is a V8 probably makes it worth less than a 530i in today's market (again, petrol price paranoia). I see there are a couple of E39 facelifts listed on trademe currently. You need to remember that an asking price doesn't translate to somethings worth. I highly doubt the examples listed will sell anytime soon as they are way overpriced. High K's yes but being 2001 facelift you'd probably still get $12-14K. Show me a 2001 facey for under 10K: i'd do the beer and buy the car

Brent why so definite on the 540 (though that is certainly my first choice) I though you sold the 540 T partly because of the expense of work, but then that don't sound right cause you'd prob doing most of the work yourself . The E39 V8 can cost $$$ if things go wrong, Why did the 540T not stay around? Pre vanos 4.4 would be 1996-1998?
arros 0 Report post Posted October 15, 2008 looking at this one 540i in Huntly but not so sure of the 'as is' bit - prob definitly want it checked out professionally (if anyone know of a good beamer person in Huntly, not that I'd expect any BMW specialist garages in Huntly This one 540 in Auckland is probably a better buy

I suppose it would be less than desirable to a potential customer on a yard but I personally thought it was a steal considering its service documentation and the fact it was a NZ facelift car. A lot of people will only buy NZ new. How many Crapanese import 545i’s have been sitting on Trade-Me for 6 months?? It was like 535i one only M-Sport and high KM’s. Just threw it in the topic as an idea as to their true cost. Would have traded it if it was a 540i Edited October 15, 2008 by Apex

arros 0 Report post Posted October 16, 2008 Not too worried about economy no. Yeah the extra performance of the 540 would do it for me over the 530/535. Coming from an E34 540 even the E39 535 I tried seemed a bit sedate. Any way gas prices are on the way down...

Allan Dad has a facelift 2002 NZ New 530i that I drive regulary. Yes, I agree they are no slug off the mark - I think I used the wrong word in my post. Should be as fast as a 535i, with a lot higher fuel consumption. I used 'as slow' to make poster 1 realise that the 535i isn't going to be a rocket like the 540i, matching up to the 530i instead.
