Just because one idiot in one newspaper tries to be a little bit controversial to get himself noticed that's a reason to hate a whole country? The REALLY funny bit, is that this is in the Guardian, a leftie teacher and social workers paper, which regularly bangs on about how all cultures should be given rights within the UK to the point that British Cristian values should not be shown for fear of upsetting the other cultures. So is banning the Haka - a cultural exhibition - not more than a little contradictory? Don't rise to such feeble bait, the guy is only out to get a few people to bite and reply in outrage. For everyone to get their deck chairs out, sit through the performance and give polite applause when its all finished saying 'jolly good show'? The haka is a challenge, those being challenged have every right to do whatever they want in return and if thats ignoring it, singing Waltzing Matilda or standing face to face with those performing it then so be it. Personally I think the Haka is being devalued somewhat. Having lived in London for 8 years (after having a kiwi connection) and seeing it performed every five minutes does tend to make the gloss wear off somewhat. I got a heap of sh*t when I lived in the UK while the All Blacks were destroying the Lions tour. Nearly got in a fight for just wearing an All Blacks jersey. But I think the All Blacks would love a challenge in a similar fasion. Like the other Islanders do. Gets everyone hyped up. bravo 35 Report post Posted November 18, 2008 I think he makes some valid points. Esp. regarding the commercialism. Waters down the act so to speak. I couldn't care less one way or the other. It does however add a bit of entertainment and excitement in the lead-up to kick off, and when performed well, does give a sense of national pride, but at the end of the day, getting all bent out of shape at someone's entitled opinion that it be scrapped is just giving in to the very insecurities the author mentions.
