Edit: hmm, a quick read on wikepedia seems to suggest that the 540 has more grunt... why would BMW do that :|? HELLBM 1531 Report post Posted January 26, 2009 Easy answer. 540is has 2 more cylinders and 1 more gear. No contest. Driven a couple of E34 M5`s, both lovely drives but they don`t do it like the 540is On another note have both a 540is and a E36 M3 (both `95) definately prefer the 540is Then we have the E39 M5. Hard to measure to be fair - never enough straight road and his M5 doesn't love corners at the moment.
