'Beamer' seems the common term in the UK, 'Bimmer' in the USA. I call this site Bimmersport for phonetic reasons, but I'd call my car a 'Beamer' if I was partial to colloquialism. Which I'm not, as 'Beamer' does sound a bit nouveau riche chavvy.

Aussies say Bimmer. I read it alot in magazines, as they spell it like that too.

I call my car Beamer. Always called them beamers.

Both. Bimmersport when said by a german speaker sounds alot like beamer anyway.

I think I say bimmer more often than beamer.

We have a winner

Beamer is for Bikes.

Bimmer is for cars.

Bimmer is still pronounced Beamer. It is Beamersport - I cringe slightly when people say Bimmersport.

How do you get "beamer" from bimmer?

Do you use a "deemer" to adjust the brightness of your dash lights?

A quick Google reveals that they say bimmer in the UK and the owner of bimmerforums.com confirms the site name is pronounced "bimmer" not "beamer".

Everyone I know calls them "Beamers" and some of them are BMW fans & the odd person owns one also.

So, I guess its just one of those "personal" options. No right & no wrong way.

But I'm still under the impression Oz say "Bimmer"... but theres a couple Aussies on here who could correct me? Most probably the same as us, various people say both versions?

I agree. It doesn't bother me either way. I refer to the site as bimmer and normally the car as Beamer.

Cheers

The term "beemer/beamer" started as an acronym for the abbreviation "BMW," adapted from the early-20th century British pronunciation of BSA (as "beeser" or "beezer"), whose motorcycles were often racing BMWs. Over time, the term became closely associated with BMW motorcycles.

The term "bimmer" was later coined to refer (exclusively) to BMW automobiles. As such, use of the word "beemer/beamer" to refer to a BMW automobile is frowned upon by some BMW enthusiasts, because it is the term used for motorcycles. Although the distinction is completely arbitrary, to this day, the media, movies, and most people still use the term "beemer/beamer" to refer to the automobiles. Interestingly, in the German language, the correct pronunciation of the term "bimmer" is "beemer/beamer".
