Need your opinions on a Track Car

Hi guys,

Myself and a mate (savant), are looking at buying a trackcar. Not for road driving, but soley for the circuit and hopefully one day do the Targa, potentially even looking at doing some gravel stuff one day

Were pretty much focused on a car that is 4WD and has a hearty turbo.

We've sort of allowed $30,000 for the initial outlay to get it to the 'take it out for a blast on the track stage'

We'd be looking to get a full cage fitted, strip out the interior, 2 x race seats and 2x harnesses.

Obviously there'll be ongoing costs, maintenance etc which we're aware of.

What are your thoughts and why?

I've owned a Sierra Cosworth RS and currently own an E30 M3 (see my signature) which I will be selling as I want a dedicated track car and don't really want something that is road legal.

Evo, at least you can set it up for more than one surface, rally/road... but the skylines are more track orentated over rally.

that's just a guess, I don't actually know anything about race cars.

Evo RS are awesome ... just say yes lol ,

I drove a Evo 6 RS last year with front and rear braces and some suspension work etc (previous Jap owner had spent alot of coin id say) and I've wanted one ever since, power was just amazing and it handled amazingly with even me driving (useless) haha, and atleast with RS's you dont have to worry about "AYC" Diffs, you get the proper good old LSD

If you want to do Targa or rally, your car will have to have to be road legal ie it needs a WOF.

IMO you will be best to buy a rally car as they are relatively easy to set up for the track and already come with 2 seats etc and a trip computer. I would be looking at an EVO, there are plenty on Trade Me and some real bargains out there atm.

Both those GTR's would not be allowed on Targa. Also make sure that the car you look has a current Motorsport Authority card as well.

That Evo7 RS would be my pick.

I think the main issue with Evo's is they're only 280hp... We're after more like 400-500hp and the GTR's seem to offer this more easily.

Hmmmm,

The Skyline would be fine in the Targa, we would just have to go through all the paperwork of trying to register it as a 'Special Interest Vehicle'. All you need for the Targa is a road legal car right? (plus cage etc etc)

Let's ignore Rally from the equation as everyone seems to have jumped on that point.

If we were going to do rally stuff it would be probably only be 1% of the events etc.

I guess to a point we are looking for something a little different, that will make a mean trackday weapon.

Open days at Hampton, Pukekohe and Taupo is where the car we get will spend 95% of its time.

Yeah, 'cos this might be a goer could ask them for a 400hp engine package - probably just needs a RB26 with bolt-ons + tune.

FWIW I reckon the white Evo I posted would be a better deal than the Spec C.

Buying a prebuilt car, cage suspension etc, has its benifits from the out of the box ready to race point of view, but consider the wear and tear a used race car will have on engine and chassis conponents. If its a long term thing, buying a car and building it up may be a better option instead of working through issues a molested car may have. kinda a "better the devil you know" thing.

I like the idea of it being a bit of a project also, kind of being able to personalising it myself.

Matt knows the efforts i've gone through with my car... Don't buy a pre-built car with the intention of it being turn key... no mater the condition... you will always find things you will want to improve/change/find need replacement...

Race car from brand new, seam welded body, rose jointed suspension, Koni coil overs at each corner, blade adj anti roll bars, massive willwoods, 6 pot front. 2.4 litre stroked Mitsi evo, through Getrag (BMW-M5) 6 speed to Ford ETC 7.5 inch diff, Porsche half shafts. Id go the EVO RS (They are overdone though), The first GTR is not that quick, ive seen it and my car is 3seconds off it around Ruapuna! not good enough. The second GTR is a Gun City (Henry %$#@) GTR those guys import some serious GTRs and a quite picky, id say its a very quick car but they are a bit of a boat compared to an EVO/WRX. That Cossie is pretty cool i have to say

Incorrect. Those gtrs can not be complied through the special interest vehicles clause. This only applies to cars that are not yet in the country and you must apply for that car to be included before you import it. Hence why those cars are not complied.

And the chances of you having a GTR included in that clause is near nil.

Why don't you look at a car that can be included in a race series. Whats the point in building up a car to race when there is nobody to race with other than yourself.

You could look at the production class with the Evo's and WRX's. They are relatively stock.

we are selling our mazda rx7 FD targa car, we just did a full ground up rebuild on it for the last targa in which we came fifth over all, We won many stages however we blew a gearbox and dropped a couple stage that why we went dont positions. Its 450hp at the wheels and totally flys. very competitive car, all the 911 turbos and Maseratis couldn't keep up.
