Need your opinions on a Track Car

Recommended Posts

The only thing we are dead set on is it has to be quite fast. Sell us on a 2wd option?

Also remember most of your budget will be munched up in buying the vehicle. From stock to stick in all the gear youre looking around 10-30k in race car extras. Best to buy one someone has already spent the $$$ on doing the prep. 30k should get you something quite nice :)

I think the main issue with Evo's is they're only 280hp... We're after more like 400-500hp and the GTR's seem to offer this more easily.

Don’t think it will be cheap though, 350-400 would set you back a few bob. 30k will get you a nicely built reliable 500+Hp RB30DET.

You want something you can use in as many events as possible, no point building something that’s not eligible for any formulas. You’ll get bored of track-days really fast, especially in an AWD Turbo point and shoot car.

Is there any particular reason you need 400-500hp? Its quite a lot.

+1

Being a dedicated track car I would more be looking at the handling side of things.

No point having a 500HP car that can't go round corners very well. Also when a highly strung turbo engine needs a rebuild they arn't exactly cheap. But im sure you have factored in the full cost ownership into your figures. Not just the purchase price.

HP isn't the be all and end all.

Mark Babbs BMW would be great. Also gets you into a real race class. But it may be more than your wanting to spend.

get a cheap car to run and drive it a sh*t load - 4-500 hp is a lot for someone to drive competitively. same with 4wd, prob not the best beginner. better to have a car that you can drive and enjoy than one you have to spend a sh*t load getting ready and never get round to finishing (not a personal comment, just a gen observation since there is so many "projects" hanging about it)

Hi guys,

Myself and a mate, are looking at buying a trackcar. Not for road driving,

Were pretty much focused on a car that is 4WD and has a hearty turbo.

We've sort of allowed $30,000 for the initial outlay to get it to the 'take it out for a blast on the track stage'

That fits the description of a Nissan "Patrol"

Get a 2WD Mk1 or Mk2 Escort and learn to drive it sideways on the tarseal, then you have Track, Rally and DriftCar that will also be acceptable at Classic Meets

Then spend the $15000 left over on a trailer and a "4WD with a hearty Turbo" tow hack [ see ,you can have your cake and eat it ]

We flew down from Auckland to Christchurch on Wednesday and drove two R32 GTR Skylines.

One was single turbo

The other car a race car was twin.

We're pretty sold on the GTR thing now I think :) We just need to figure out which route to take. Do we want to buy something that is ready to go or do we want a bit of a project with the $10,000 we'd have if we purchased the road car over the race car.

I think we could certainly have a nice roll cage, 2 x seats and 2 x harnesses for $10,000.

Just to give you an idea of costs of cages... The crome-molly one in my car that Mark Herbert built for himself - i asked him on a rough cost for if he was to do it for a customer, he said it would be roughly 6-6.5k (included though firewall and tower bracing). My raceteck 4009 seats where roughly $1000 each, 6-point harnesses where a couple hundred each.

Don't forget an intercom amp, headsets, touring headsets, fire extinguisher (do you want a single can or a complete incar/bonnet system),

Neither of those cars are road legal...

I've been out and had a chat to Racefx about cages. Roughtly $3,300 for steel or approximately $6,000 for chromolly cage (front turret bracing etc)

We can certainly do without intercom amp, headsets, touring headsets etc for quite some time.

Fire extinguisher is a must, I have one with a bracket with would be a good start.

Well aware that neither of those cars are road legal. The grey 'road' car has all the dereg papers so certainly has the potential of being SIV'd one day.

We were looking at some Sparco seats and sabelt harnesses.

Trailer for both, and for the road car: brakes (I'd do a brake upgrade for 500hp), tyres ... etc

Cheers Cam, I've read the brakes on the R32 GTR are sh*t even with stock Horsepower.

We'll certainly be after some semis or full slicks too

As for trailer, not yet I'm afraid, I can get a hirepool trailer for $40 per day which is pretty cheap I think, considering we'll probably only get the car on the track once a month.

Fair enough - its a good backup plan (one I hadn't thought of to be honest!)

Price up a brake upgrade before committing - its never cheap.

Ohh woe is me,

Now were looking at going down the path of putting an S54 engine (E46 M3) into an E30 M3.

Still very keen on an Nissan R32 GTR but taking our time and trying to figure out which would make the quickest overall track car for realitive money spent.

Bang for buck is a tricky thing to nail.

If it was my money, I would try focus on power to weight and availabilty of parts to take into main consideration.

Yeea but i thought that the car had to still contain its original engine type.. therefore an e30 m3 would not be a suitable candidate for an s54 in open class?? As 4cyl vs 6 cyl.. Would have to do what you are doing Josh with a M325i..

If for fast road and random fun (read non competitive) track days an s62 in an M3 would be sacrilege but badass at that!

Edit: or in keeping to your original request (4wd) go for a 01-05 rs4 and strip/cage it..

True Baller :P

Body shape .. so you can run 6 cylinders in an e30 m3 because the e30 came out in a 6.

Use to be a guy running a m54b30 in a e30 m3 a few seasons a go.

This is all subject to the commitee too. So thats why you see e46 v8's in this year, They are a replica of the e46 GTR m3.

Really.. Thats a bit of a loophole then because isn't the M3 body different to the stock E30? Suspension and chassis wise?

The m3 unibody isnt really different. Only the stuff attached to that body is..(yes the e30 m3 unibody has a different part number as with all m cars) But I get what you mean.
