All things being equal which they definately are not, a well maintained and cared for 328i is hard to beat. BUT, and its a big BUT, if you are keen on 'doin her up' try to get a motorsport if thats your thing. Getting one up to spec is not worth it in the end. If you can get one with all of the major stuff done like shocks, radiator, waterpump, thermo, ball joints, etc etc, I could go on, but the more done the less you have to do regardless of which one you choose. Once you have driven a good 328i, its hard to take anything smaller unless of course its in great nick, blah blah.

325i FTW

Theyre usually cheaper and pretty much the same as a 328i

performance wise

An M50 powered E30....the only decent part of a E36 is used

But seriously if it was me, I have seen a couple NZ new 325i manual 4dr's for around 4k. That'd be what I would do.

328i if you cant afford a M3. Whatever you get, get a manual. With LSD. And cool ass wheels. And a coupe.

ANd then apply for 36 Mafia.

If you're asking that, and still at school then I reckon a nice NZ New facelift 318iS manual with all the goodies is as good a bet.

my 323i does 550kms on a 65 litre tank (750kms on solely open road driving)

I use VPower, a full tank at the moment is approx $115

performance - it's 20hp less than a 325i or 328i, so won't keep up with them

but I like it because it's a good mix between power and economy

hope that helps

FYI: 323i is quicker than a 325i, but slower than the 328i.

No, tomorrow night is boy racer night..... lol. I also have single mass flywheel and z3 shifter which has to be worth at least an additional 20kw and 56 cool points....

i had a 92 325i with 3.15 diff and lightish m20 flywheel had 112kw at the wheels at 6000rpm chipped ecu with 240k's on the clock /

i now have 96 328i with same diff , extractors , std ecu same sort of flywheel and has 111.8kw at 5200rpm with 101k on the clock .

328i is annoying on the track as the power just stops at 5200rpm(will rev beyond but no point) where as the 325i used to pull all the way to 6000rpm .

but i like the better torque of the 328i for driving around town etc and plan on remapping the ecu to get rid of the power limiter etc .

328i gets better fuel ecno too.

we will have a nice 325i coupe ready at work for sale soon 1995 model with 130k on the clock and tidy .

I concur with Wom, my 323i was about the same, 550-580km per tank in Auckland probably 50-50 city/motorway.

Strangely, my new 330Ci can do the same k despite larger cc rating and heavier.
